Welcome back to the school week. That would be sarcasm.

Not too much happening over the weekend, with the big story being the b-ball team's 75-67 OT win against rival Saint Joseph's at the Palestra. The game was an absolute barn burner, and we'll have a full recap up shortly.

While we're at it, might as well make mention of the rest of the sports as well:

The women's b-ball team lost at Dayton by a score of 71-63. Dayton took over sole possession of 2nd place in the A-10 with the win.

The baseball team did not start the season off right as they were swept by Florida Gulf Coast (the college, not the geographical feature) in a three game series this weekend. The Owls were outscored 7-39 over the three games. That's what you would call ugly.

However, the track team helped save the weekend for Temple sports with a third place finish in A-10 indoor competition, their best finish EVER.

Also, peep this article on fencing coach Nikki Franke, who just reached 600 friggin' wins in her coaching career at Temple, which dates back to 1972. You know, when we were all still tadpoles.

Speaking of tadpoles, check out this article about in vitro fertilization that quotes Temple geneticist Carmen Sapienza. To sum up the article in one sentence: "in vitro babies are genetically different, but we don't know if that necessarily means they aren't healthy." Oh, ok thanks.

In other, non sports news, Temple got a little shout-out by Inky writer and Temple alum Solomon Jones in his article defending Philly, who was rated the 20th most miserable city by Forbes.com. Well Mr. Forbes, obviously you haven't partied at TU or Old City.

Temple professor Allen Hornblum had a nice little sigh of relief over the weekend after an NJ appellate court judge ruled that libel charges brought against him were correctly thrown out. The charges were filed by Philly crime-dude John Berkery after Hornblum wrote a book about crime in Philly. If you see Hornblum around, give him a pat on the back. Just don't sneak up on him.

Oh yea, Michelle Obama happened to swing by the Fresh Grocer today. Kinda a big deal?

Weather: Sunny and temps near the 40's. As far as February weekends in Philly go, this is about as good as it gets.

Movies: Check here for show times at the Pearl. However we must remind you that Shutter Island, the insane looking new Scorcese psychological thriller starring that dude who froze to death in Titanic came out today. For those who've missed it, the preview:

Saturday:

Really, not too much going on Saturday

The men's basketball team plays those damn St. Joe's Hawks at the historic Palestra on Upenn's campus. The only catch is that it's a noon tip-off, and riding subways hungover at 11 a.m. ain't exactly our thing. But we're doing it anyways. Stubhub. The game will also be broadcast on comcast sports net.

For the slightly more futbol inclined, the Philly KiXX have a home game at the Liacouras Center at 7:05. Tickets are only 9 bucks with your Owl card, and from what we hear the games are actually pretty entertaining to watch.

For the slightly more vagina inclined, the last showing of the Vagina Monologues takes the stage at 8 p.m. in the underground. Tickets are $5 with your student ID, which is cheaper than the cover at Show & Tell.

Sunday:

Church.

It's not really anything anybody will go to, but we've got a sweet spot for Lewis Black so we thought we'd throw out that he'll be in Princeton, NJ at 7:30. So if driving an hour and paying $45 dollars to see a comic on Sunday night is your thing, well then this is for you.

Also, let's take a second to give philly.com a hearty chuckle for listing John Mayer as funk. And then another just for John Mayer.

Weather: Pretty much the same as yesterday with temps near 40 and the sun out to help melt some more snow.

What's going on at Temple:

Once again the Engineering school is providing some entertainment as part of National Engineering week:

Virtual play-doh: They somehow rigged a system where people can manipulate two wiimotes and sculpt virtual play-doh on screen. Oh yea and it's in 3d.

Environmental seminar: Get your daily dose of sustainability (just as important as flintstones vitamins) as dudes from the regional planning center talk about how to grow the city without hurting mother nature's feelings. Did I mention free pizza?

Women's tennis takes on the Drexel Dragons at 12:30. Fortunately for Temple, dragons are only their mascot.

The vagina monologues are in full swing, and tonight's show runs from 8-10. Tickets are just 5 bucks for students.

Stuff going on elsewhere:

The Sixers are hosting the San Antonio Spurs in a 7 pm game. History has shown they will probably lose.

And the college weekend has officially arrived.

So tonight's big story is media outlets catching on to Temple sophomore Tyler Grady (top right) making the round of 24 on American Idol. A quick google search of the dude turns up a bunch load of stuff, even though the Temple News has been on it since Tuesday. Technically Grady isn't enrolled at Temple since he took a semester off to pursue the show, but he's reppin' anyways. Grady's previous television experience was as a stunt double on that 70's show.

Feel like having your facebook habits instantly broken down? Check out this Temple Times article about a study done by Journalism chair Andrew Mendelson that examines why we college kids Fbook like we do. Basically, we're just tryin' to live the dream and aren't being realistic. Fortunately for us, we're having a lot of fun doing it.

The Broad & Cecil also sprung back into action today, letting us know that trash day has, in fact, returned. How'd they know I had 40's in my garbage?

Finally, for a quick chuckle check out the first response to this yahoo question "Is Temple University a dangerous school?" "I also read an article about a graduate student who was murdered there, the guy who did it said he did it "just because." I never considered applying there for that reason." Mmmhmmm. Happens all the time.

Helpful paper writing application for the ADD generation

We have a nice little tip for everyone out there who couldn't sit down and write a paper if their GPA depended on it.

No, it's not adderall... Although..

No, it's a free-to-download program called darkroom (for pcs) and its counterpart writeroom (for macs).

Essentially all the application does is turn your computer into an old school one. It fills the screen with darkness, so all you can see is text. The default text color is green, but you can change it to whatever you want. Turn your volume off, and you have a distraction free digital environment to let you focus on your work. We tried it, and it definitely helped to concentrate, especially because you feel super guilty every time you are tempted to close out the program just to go on Facebook.

It doesn't spell check, but it does let you save and has a wordcount feature.

Try it. If it fails, then go buy adderall.

Weather: Slightly warmer today with the temp hanging up near 40 degrees and sunny, falling to the low 30's overnight. Hopefully this means a lot of this snow will start to gtfo.

And now for a message from PRSSA, which we assume stands for either Public Relations Students Society of America or the Pterodactyl Reconnaissance Squad of South America: PRSSA is having a fundraiser at Mad River Bar and Grille in Old City on Thursday from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. $3 to enter, drink specials and half price appetizers all night! Some proceeds from the fundraisers will go towards raising money for Relay for Life.

Stuff going on at Temple:

Slept with some interesting people in the past few months? Have no fear, free HIV testing in the HEART office is here.

Are you about to graduate and have recently realized you have no idea what you're going to do about finding one of those..erm..jobs afterwards? Might wanna swing by the career fair from 12-4 in the SAC 200, and a tie would be nice. The career center website has more details and a list of employers.

The engineering schools continues their week of putting cool shit on display as they demonstrate a hybrid electric fuel cell. This cell, used to power eco-friendly cars, runs on internal combustion, electricity, and our personal favorite, PEM fuel cells.

There is also a lecture titled "'The Soul is the Prison of the Body:’ Pedagogy and Punishment in Allegorical Debates Between Body and Soul" given by Masha Raskolnikov of Cornell University. We'd make a joke, but you're probably already amused.

Tonight is also the open dress rehearsal of the vagina monologues. Ba dun chh.

Stuff going on elsewhere:

Phillies individual game tickets went on sale today at 8 am. Opening day is already sold out, and we're having a hard time getting through to buy tickets. Still, give it a go.

Citizen Cope at the TLA. Unfortunately it's also $30, so nobody is going to go.

So that'll do it for humpday. As it usually the case on this droll day, nothing really happened. Really.

The big news is that the men's and women's basketball teams both took care of business. The men's team shwooped up on a pretty bad St. Bonaventure team 73-55. (further research indicates that St. Bonaventure is actually located in Western China). Ramone Moore, shown here in this picture we jacked from google, led the Owls with a career high 18 points. The women's team took out a pretty good (2nd place in A-10) Duquesne team at the Liacouras Center, 52-41, for their 20th win of the season.

In other Temple news, the Computer Recycling Center is again getting some press, this time from the Environmental Protection Agency. Today the CRC, which recycles thousands of otherwise junkable computers, printers, monitors, and robots every year, showed other colleges in the region how it's done. So next time you get your laptop swiped, check out the CRC.

Finally, check out this article on first lady Obama visiting Philly on Friday to talk about some supermarkets and shit. The article quotes a Temple study that found a link between childhood obesity and the high calorie products that are sold in corner stores near school. The article discusses initiatives that exist to replace these stores with healthier foods, in edition to building supermarkets in under-served areas (The Fresh Grocer at Temple, for example).

In addition, the staff of the C&W got in a verbal altercation today when discussing the most forgotten state in the U.S., and decided to let the extremely intelligent readers of the Cherry and What decide which state takes the cake by posting a completely random poll on the SITE.

The return of humpday

And we're back to the ol' humpday after last week's little snow day hiatus. Just 24 more hours and it's basically the weekend.

Weather: Pretty much the same as yesterday, temps in the lows 30's, with possible flurries this evening.

What's going on at Temple:

Tyler's annual student art displays begin today and run every Wed-Sat for the rest of the month. If you're feeling artsy, so grab a delicious latte and check out your peers' artwork. Check the Tyler website for more deets.

Want to be Mickey Mouse in Disney world over summer break? Yea, I didn't really think so but if you know anyone who does might want to point them to this presentation by Disney reps today. They're doing two shows, another at 5 p.m. No word yet on whether or not Donald Duck will be in attendance.

And our daily "no-duh" shout-out goes to this Tuttleman Learning Center workshop on how to avoid plagiarism. "Ok everyone, you see these words on this paper here. Those are someone else's words. If you use them, and fail to cite them, that's called plagiarism. Let's go over it one more time..."

Sports:

Women's basketball plays a rare 12 p.m. game today against Duquesne in a "pink zone" game where fans are encouraged to wear pink to show breast cancer what's up. Helping the fight against cancer is great, but I'm not sure a noon start time is what the doctor ordered to cure the low-attendance woes.

The men's team is on the road at St. Bonaventure, which I believe is in northwest Alaska. A victory would give the Owls 21 wins and keep them close atop the A-10 standings. We'll be attempting to find a video feed so check back for that later today.

Going on elsewhere:

Who needs a time machine when you have New Found Glory at the electric factory? With Hellogoodbye and Saves the Day opening. And someone called "fireworks" too but we don't remember prancing around like an idiot in singing their songs in high school. Tickets are $23.50.

No but seriously...it is.

Other stuff:

First, head on over to The Temple News because their latest issue is out and it's quality as always.

Peep this article on Temple's football program and how it's snagging all sorts of good recruits. Kids are turning down big time BCS schools like Ohio State and Vanderbilt to play at Temple, which is exactly what you need to do to turn into a top-25 team. Hoot hoot.

Speaking of top-25 rankings, Temple basketball only moved up 1 spot in yesterday's rankings, despite their blowout of 19-5 Rhode Island this past Saturday. A-10 foe Richmond joined them in the rankings at number 25, for their first ranking since 1986. I smell an A-10 tourny war.

For everyone out there complaining about snow and ice still being around campus, check this Temple Times article about the overwhelming amount of manpower Temple has utilized to clear all this shit.

Oh yea, Roy Halladay bobble heads! Which reminds us, Wednesday is the day Phillies pitchers and catchers have to report. For baseball fans, this is a big deal. 2 months til we're back in season.

Weather: Cold(33), gray, and snowy. Well those snows days were fun, huh? Now where the hell is Spring?!

What's up at Temple:

College of engineering play day: It seems the college of engineering is having a bunch of stuff going on, including:

Terminator comes to campus: One lucky volunteer at the Engineering school will get to control a robotic arm that mimics their muscle movements. Next week: arm wrestling competition.

Making forts out of office supplies: One lucky volunteer will get to crawl inside a 3x5 fort made out of paper clips and have it collapse on them. Or something like that.

Penny car competition: students build cars out of pennies, toothpicks, gum, and one little bottle of spermicidal lube. Awards go for speed (most lube) and aesthetics (shiniest pennies)

Mardi gras luncheon at Ambler: in order to celebrate fat Tuesday, Ambler is serving up a cajun meal. Food is free upon flashing.

Today's big story was..you guessed it..the return of the Cherry and What? Cheers.

Temple also made a few headlines today.

First, no, the snow tonight isn't doing anything. Peep this article about how the current snowfall will have minimal impact, much to the delight of senior Morgan Zalot who was quoted saying that the snow has been more of a pain in the ass than anything. In so many words.

Temple researchers wrote a new chapter in the book of "blatantly obvious ' scientific discoveries' that probably cost tens of thousands of research dollars." How do you keep your kids from getting fat? Eat family dinners, get more rest, and don't sit in front of the TV. Who knew?

Peep this article on the Temple University Choir's upcoming performance at the Kimmel Center. They're taking part in some kind of "all-Bach" program. If you want to play a drinking game with this article, take a swig every time it uses the name "Bach."

Check this story on the play 'Divine Words' which is currently playing at Tomlinson Theater through the weekend. Tickets are 5-20 bucks.

Men's B-ball: Temple v. Rhode Island Recap

Temple 78, Rhode Island 56. All pictures taken via my shitty camera phone.

Shwooping. That pretty much sums up Temple’s 78-56 victory over the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday. Ramone Moore got the start over a hurt(?) Juan Fernandez and dropped in 12, while Michael Eric (19), Ryan Brooks (18), and Lavoy Allen (17) also scored in double digits. This game was over before half time, as Eric slammed home a shit load of dunks, Ramone Moore had a nice one of his own, and even resident scrappy-short-white-kid T.J. Dileo took a Fernandez alley-oop to the rim and brought the Liacouras Center to its feet.

It was also Hooter’s birthday, and every mascot within a 20 mile radius showed up to celebrate. 10 cool points to the first person who can identify what the hell that penguin was? At a number of time-outs, the mascots all took to the floor and awkwardly danced around, at one point causing one of the referees to flashback to an acid trip and immediately run from the arena.

The Philly Phanatic was also on hand, as can be seen in this picture where he is pimping it with the cheerleaders and Diamond Gems. At one point he was booed by a Mets fan in the student section, who then remembered that the Phillies have been owning his team and STFUed.

Other notables: The Owls had their highest shooting percentage ever (68.6%)... Hooter’s birthday hat looked ridiculous… The victory gives Temple’s its third straight 20 win season. A few white Temple students in the bottom of the student section held up raised fists during the national anthem, exposing themselves as ignorant douchebags for the 12th straight home game.

Someone's got a case of the Monday's, but it's not the Cherry and What! Despite our college mentality, we actually did the most productive thing in two months on a Monday morning. Earnin' that diploma. In honor of our pluck, and to get your week going right, here is the classic damn the man clip from office space. Damn it feels good to be a gansta.

Weather: Sunny and hanging around in the low 30's all day, then dropping a little bit with some snow in the evening and night. Will we have off from classes tomorrow? No, we will not.

Temple stuff:

Are you a senior graduating in May? Did you register for graduation yet? Because if you didn't, uh, today is your last day. Yes, panicking is appropriate at this time.

"Spread the love week" kicks off at Temple Ambler with stuff-a-bear. If stuffing a bear is your idea of spreading the love, then man is this for you.

Like Jeopardy? How about black history? The TU Black Public Relations Society is putting on a little game show in the Underground this evening. Dust off those old IH and race studies books, there's prizes to be won. Alex Trebek will, in fact, be hosting.

Don't forget to look out for the latest men's basketball rankings. Temple was ranked #21/21 last week, and given their beat down of Rhode Island the other day and a few teams ahead of them losing, the Owls should be moving on up.

Welcome back to the Cherry and What, C&W readers.

"So uh, what the hell man, what's going on?"

So as you know we took a hiatus, but we've been busy hitting the 'ol drawing board and rethinking what we're gonna do with the site and content. It wouldn't have taken as long, except we've also been doing a whole lot of that school and partying stuff too. But we're back now, and we've got big things happening.

"Hey dude... your site looks exactly the same."

Yes, but not for long. We're currently about 63.4% done with the new site, and expect it to be up and running within a week. It's going to be an upgrade over this one, with room for multiple pages and photo slideshows and all sorts of fun, pseudo-journalistic stuff. You can see a little teaser here, featuring a completely random picture of pre-incarceration Dionte Christmas.

"I don't care about how your web page looks, I just want to read some good stuff."

Aw shucks, thanks for seeing the inner beauty, your mother must be proud. In addition to the new site, we're gonna do our best to bring you a lot of extra content, and more closely and expansively cover Temple. No, we're not gonna do what the Temple News does, because they're already good as shit at that, but Temple is certainly big and entertaining enough that we can let ya know about some things that might otherwise go unnoticed.

"Who are you Katie Couric? I'm just looking for some laughs."

We regret to inform you that this may be the last Cherry and What update for a while.

As much as we love our dysfunctional pseud0-journalistic humor website, other obligations have taken too much of our time and creative juices to put out what we feel is quality daily content.

In the words of many a rock star, it's better to burn out then fade away. However, like many a rap star, we're already planning our return to the game in the not too distant future.

We plan on having a fully revamped website up as soon as our other obligations allow us, and we would love to have your help. If you're an aspiring journalist or think you can write about daily college shit at Temple, we'd love to have you. Anyone who is interested simply needs to send a little something something about themselves to cherryandwhat@temple.edu and we'll be in contact before you can say "Saint Joe's Blows." We've got big plans in the future but we're gonna more sweet Temple student brain power to make them happen.

News update:

A few things going on over the past 24 hours.

First, more Temple Football. Damn, I guess winning 7 games gets your team just a little bit of media attention. This article is a bit different in the rest in that it focuses on Temple maintaining their drive and killer instinct despite the success they've been having, which Al Golden realizes isn't automatic.

Next, check out this piece on the new Hillel center at the corner of Norris and 15th. The center has been open for quite a while now, but this article covers exactly what Hillel is about, as well as some notes on Jewish life and culture.

So you all know the world is going to end in 2012 right? Peep this article on the upcoming disaster of a movie 2012, which quotes Temple prof Ronald Webb arguing why the whole thing is just damn preposterous, boy.

WEEKEND!

Friday:

1-6: Book and media swap in Tuttleman 201. Got lots of old books, videos, cds, and other shit you don't need? Bring them along to this swap, pay $5 bucks that goes to help youngsters publish "Treehouse books," and peruse other people's old junk.

1-2: Internationally known photographer Lonnie Graham shows off decades worth of his shit.

7: Women's basketball starts their season against Illinois in McGonigle Hall. The team projects to be pretty solid, as always.

7:30: Student dance concert, Conwell Dance Theater. Catch the best of the best dance performances of the students, by the students, and for the money.

8:00: The first performance of "Dreaming of Diamonds: The Conwell Project" in Tomlinson Theater. In honor of Temple's 125, the University is putting on a little play about the founding of Temple, starring founder Russell Conwell as himself.

8:30: Temple football at Akron. Yea it's away, but the game is on ESPNU. But seeing as how nobody in the world has ESPNU, the Draught Horse has you covered, as they'll have the game on in addition to handing out free Temple b-ball posters and of course, drink specials. All you underage kiddies are allowed in for the game, but word is they're kickin' ya out afterwards.

8-11: SHOT! heads into its final weekend, making this the last Friday night performance. If you haven't already checked it out, it comes highly recommended. It'll inspire you to do good things.

Saturday:

Temple rugby continues its successful season as they take on West Chester for the EPRU (Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union) championship. For deets contact Mike Rizzo at 908-907-0800.

Weather: High 40's and rainy, all day and all night. Well that sucks.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

12-3: Who wants some more veggies? Temple community gardens will be selling some of that green stuff in the SAC today to help out a local non-profit. And, ya know, your health too. We heard asparagus goes great with beer.

1:30: Temple puts the "fun" into Umfundalai Dance Technique. Check out this presentation from the dance school chair in Rock Hall to learn all about this style of dancing.

2:30-3:30: For the criminal justice majors out there, boy is this a panel for you. Mayor John Street, Pennsylvania Superior Court Justice Ron Castille, and former police commie Sylvester "Stallone" Johnson will be sitting down to talk about crime n' stuff.

4-5: Also for all those criminal justice majors and lawyer wannabes, some dude named Ronald Jay Cohen will be in the Klein Law Building to give a speech called "For the Love of Lawyering." Okie dokie.

8-10: Afraid of getting mugged on the street and not knowing what to do? Learn the location of and proper way to deliver a kick to the male genitals at this TUPD self-defense demonstration in the IBC.

Other good stuff:

10-2: Phi Sig grilled cheese fundraiser, friggin' awesome! Stop by Phi sig sig's house right near 15th and Diamond to pick up $1 grilled cheeses all night. "Hey Jimmy, this keg is fuckin' kicked and now we gotta walk home in the rain." "Hey yea that sucks, but at least we can go get some hot grilled cheese." The Temple news today is mostly about our profs kicking ass and making names.

First, professor Laurence Steinberg was awarded a whopping $1,000,000 from the Jacobs foundation, one of Europe's largest help-the-kids foundations. The millie must go to research that benefits adolescents, which Steingberg has a lot of experience in, being a national leader in development and juvenile justice. Atta boy Steinberg.

Former Business school chair William Dunkelberg is also a man getting some recognition. Peep this philly.com article about how Dunkelberg is a speed dial staple of some of Philadelphia's biggest business figure's phones...probably number 7. Dunkelberg has gained a lot of attention, including front page of the Wall Street Journal, for his economic analysis.

Finally, history prof Beth Bailey makes news for her upcoming presentation at the University of Tennessee. Bailey is speaking on her book "America's Army: Making the All-Volunteer Force," which covers the last 50 years of military activity by the United States. It's not a comedy.

As always, plenty of sports news to be found. Except today, Temple football makes the front-frigging-page of Philly.com! The headline links to this video, which showcases both Temple's excitement at our first football bowl game since we've been alive, and also our many different students. That's called "diversity," Villanova.

Not to leave out the other sports, Owlsports.com posted up two articles today, one on women's b-ball season opener against Illinois on Friday, and volleyball's senior day on Saturday.

Yesterday was another slow news day for T to the emple U, but we'll throw it on anyway.

First, head over to www.temple-news.com to check out their latest edition online. Or do the old school thing and pick up one of those paper things that are scattered around campus. Speaking of technology, our pick is this article that discusses how our generation is composed mostly of whiners and needs to reevaluate our online behavior. True. That.

Still speaking of technology, this article, based on Temple research, discusses how over-texting can hurt the body in the same way improper typing can. Find yourself randomly sore in the neck or shoulders? Could be from texting. Or it could be...

Then you've got your Bob Dylan, and we finally found a review. Check this one from philly.com, which says that the ol' man put on quite a show for his age. It also says the seating was just a little more than half full. Well, guess Dylan's no Lupe Fiasco.

In sports news, just have a few articles. First, check out this article previewing Temple b-ball, which contrary to our error on Monday, starts this Saturday at the University of Delaware.

We can pretty much start categorizing stories as "Bernard Pierce" stories separate from "temple football stories" (and rightly so) as two more popped up on the google radar. So about this humpday thing. Well first, it's Veteran's day. Thanks veterans, you dudes rock. If you also want to say thanks to our men and women in uniform, Temple is doing a couple of thangs.

First, at 11 p.m. there is going to a ceremony honoring veterans directly outside J and H. They're gonna have the color guard, and guest speakers, and complimentary lunch for veterans, and all sorts of other good stuff.

We've also heard something about creating care-packages and letters for the troops overseas in the SAC. However, time and other important details have alluded us. We'll work on that, but if you've got the intel, feel free to post.

So you're in college, and you don't know how to research or write a paper? Well, you're probably screwed, but might as well try and learn from this 11 a.m. workshop in Tuttleman 201, which claims to be able to teach you how to do it. In 1 hour. Bring addies.

All you Ambler kids have the opportunity to go hear some sweet, sweet poetry tonight at 7, in honor of prof Bernadette McBride, who won Poet Laureate of Bucks County this year. She'll be there doing her thing, along with a few other faculty members.

Oh and, lol, Papa Roach at the Wachovia Center at 7 p.m. If you're looking for something to do tonight, this should be your last resort. Hu-hyuck.

Well wasn't that some crazy news! In other stuff, Bob Dylan came to Temple tonight! Haven't heard any reports yet, but we predict he sounds like he does on your itunes, except 30 years older.

Did you know Temple students are entrepreneurial? You know, it's what sets us apart from the Penn kids who already have money to roll around in and the Penn State kids who think that liquidation is just something you do while tailgating. Tonight's example: Chi-Chi Enigwe, the Temple alum who owns her own damn PR firm.

Not convinced? Check out this article about the comedy troupe "Secret Pants" who are getting some notoriety and met at Temple in 2004.

Oh yes, and sports. First, congrats to the soccer team for taking down #15 Charlotte in their last game of the season. The game was a perfect final note for the team's seniors, including all-American J.T. Noone.

Next, check out this Philly.com article previewing Temple men's basketball, which tips off this Friday, with the first home game coming next Friday against Siena. Head coach Fran Dunphy's tone didn't sound too promising. The gist? A lot of the team doesn't work hard enough and he doesn't know what the team's identity is. Good thing they only have the toughest non-con schedule in the nation. Oh boy.

Interview with TSG allocations chair Natalie Ramos-Castillo

You probably don't know this, but $45 of your tuition is plucked every semester to go into a large pot-$100,000 to be exact- that is redistributed to student organizations on campus. What you also probably doesn't know is that this redistribution is overseen by junior Temple student Natalie Ramos-Castillo and her TSG allocations committee. We think those numbers warrant a little one on one interview with the college Senator, to find out more about what she does.

C&W: So you're the allocations chair for TSG, huh? What the hell is that?

Ramos-Castillo: Allocations chair oversees the GAF money that is distributed to organizations on campus. GAF money comes from the General Activities Fee which is split between different departments on campus like the sports teams and such.

C&W: So how much money does your committee allocate a semester?

Ramos-Castillo: We were given $100,000 for the entire year. I want to allocate about $45,000 this semester and $55,000 next semester.

C&W: Can we have some?

Ramos-Castillo: No, sorry, only if you were a registered organization.

C&W: So that money technically comes from the pocket of Temple students right?

Ramos-Castillo: Yes, technically... most probably parent's pockets. It comes out of the General Activities Fee, the $45 every student pays per semester.

C&W: What would you say is the best thing that money is spent on?

Ramos-Castillo: There are a few things that are the "best thing[s]" money is spent on. Events on campus that fund raise for outside nonprofits like the Cancer Society or raising money for organizations to sponsor children. Conferences and Competitions because we send student organizations out to represent Temple University which brings a good name on behalf of Temple University.

C&W: What would you say is the most wasteful?

Ramos-Castillo: The Allocations committee will not fund events where money is wasted. The most wasteful thing in Allocations is when organizations do not use allocations. When organizations do not use allocations, the budget gets cut. From last year to this year our budget was cut $30,000. That is almost a semester's worth of events. Student organizations should use this money because it is put aside for them and the events they hold on campus.

C&W: Do you ever get tempted to just take some of that money and buy an entire Wine & Spirits?

Ramos-Castillo: No, because it is against the Allocations Guidelines; Article 2 Section 3.5 "A. funding can not be used to buy alcohol B. any event and/or location where alcohol is present or served, even if the group did not request funding for said alcohol". Maybe if you read the guidelines, you'd know!

C&W: Anything else you'd like to say to the people?

We missed you SEPTA

It's Muunday, November 9, and the C&W has your back.

Contrary to everything we said yesterday about the SEPTA strike being long and drawn out, and despite our little photoshop image about 3 inches \/ that way, the strike is over. That's right, public transportation is up and running once again, but unfortunately, it's still a fuggin' Monday.

However, the weather is doing its part to further lift our Monday spirits, as it's going to be sunny and reach into the MID TO HIGH 60's, falling to mid 50's overnight. Ya know global warming, you're alllllrighttt.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

The University is getting some H1N1 vaccines, but they're not for youuu. The announcement says they'll only go to high risk people, which probably means girls who are pregnant or expecting to be pregnant (but not girls you expect will get pregnant), people who have a chronic illness, and everyone in the President's office.

8:30-12: Tired, Ambler students? Get a free cupajoe and maybe like a bagel or something in Bright hall lobby.

10-2: Is your calling to dress up as Mickey or Minnie mouse and walk around Disney World? Well stop dreaming and head over to the Disney representatives table in the lobby of Tuttleman. Ha-hyuk.

5:30: This week's monday night film series movie is something called "Party Monster," a 1997 film directed by the great Fenton Bailey. Who else?

So the past few days have been slow news wise, reallllly slow.

However, not slower than the SEPTA negotiations, which is currently in fourth place in a footrace with a turtle, sloth, and Drew Carey. Gov. Rendell was on hand a few days ago to try and work some of that Eddie magic, and things were looking like they might work out. According to officials, a deal was just about done on Friday night, but then the SEPTA union leaders like, changed their minds, leaving Rendell to literally say "I'm out, I got a state to run." Negotiations are pretty much dead in the water, which means off-campus Temple students will still have to scrap their way to classes for the foreseeable future. Awesome!

Hey Rendell, speaking of that state you have to run, will you help congress make up their damn minds and give TU its promised bucks already? Check out this article, written by a grown up, that reminds everyone just how ridiculous the hold-up is.

In sports, Temple football continues to roll with their seventh straight win over Miami of Ohio. This one didn't come easy, as Miami rallied from being down 31-13 to take a late 32-31 lead. However, Temple showed poise late as they kicked a winning field goal. Pierce, still kicking ass, rushed for 178 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns, and came within 20 yards of overtaking second place in the national rushing leaders. Temple football: 7-2. Penn State football: 7-2. Lolz.

The women's field hockey team also faired well as they beat St. Hoe's 3-0 to make their first A-10 championship in six years. However, they lost to Richmond in the title game, but the tournament was still a strong finish to the season.

In other sports, women's volleyball came up with a nice 3-1 victory over La Salle, but the men's soccer team laid an egg to lose to St. Louis 0-1. However, soccer avoids being the only debbie downer of the weekend through this article on All-American J.T. Noone, who besides being a kick-ass soccer player, also like, speaks French, goes on ambassador missions, and has a high GPA. Oh, and he's humble too. Hoot hoot.

Weather: Sunny with temps hanging in the low 50's today, falling to low 40's overnight. This weather is why they invented hoodies.
Good stuff from the Temple Today:

First off, holy crap, props to TU on setting up a carpooling system in the midst of the SEPTA strike. Need a ride or can give a ride? Head on over to these messages boards to set something up, as many people have already started to do.

11-2: Who likes veggiesss? For all those health food nuts out there, Temple Community Gardens is having a homegrown veggie sale in the lobby of the Tyler School of Art. For everyone else, there's J and H.

12-1: Also for people going to J and H, there's this seminar in Mitten Hall 250 called "Portion Distortion". They.. sugar coat.. the purpose in the description, but it essentially is that people eat too much damn food in one sitting and need tips to stop doing that.

11-2: For those who love exploring intangible things, there's this exploring leadership seminar featuring guest speaker Sara Garonsik. She used to be the Producing Artistic Director for the Philadelphia Theater company, until she decided to change career paths and become a speaker that discusses their experiences being the Producing Artistic Director for the Philadelphia Theater Company.

7:30-Victory: Temple football vs. 1-8 Miami(OH). The Owls should continue their romp, as should Bernard Pierce against one of the worst run defenses in the country. Ah but no SEPTA, you say? TU has you covered.

"Shuttle transportation to Lincoln Financial field will be available for students. Buses will depart from the Student Center, Johnson & Hardwick and 1300 Cecil B. Moore on Main Campus, and from the Learning Center parking lot at Ambler Campus, starting at 5 p.m. All buses will return from the stadium beginning at 10 p.m."

8-10: For those who like art over football, poet Juliana Spahr will be at TUCC 222 this evening to read from her latest work, "The Transformation" which discusses a lowly caterpillar's metamorphosis into a big, beautiful butterfly. Or something like that.

Other stuff:

7:30: For the 40% of you who still like Obama, David Plouffe will be speaking at the Free Library of Philadelphia tonight. Plouffe was Obama's campaign manager last year and will be discussing his book "Audacity to Win" which reviews, well, how the hell they won. Apparently free ain't what it used to be, because it costs $7.

Well, at least humpday's over.

The Phillies lost the World Series tonight thanks to Yankees' DH Hideki Matsui, who had a World Series record 6 rbis in NY's 7-3 win. We're not gonna gum up the blog with baseball analysis-- that's what real journalists are for-- but we will say that the saddest part of all is not being able to see these guys play until spring time. After decades of futility we are lucky to be in Philly when one of the most exciting Phillies teams of all time takes the field night in and night out at Citizen's Bank. From Raulllll's early season tear (pun intended) , to Howard's long balls (no pun intended), Werth's 8 rbi games, Chut and J-Roll connecting for spectacular double plays, Victorino being the friggin' man, Stairs sending balls into orbit, Eyre eating twinkees, Chooch speaking broken english, Charlie bobbleheading, Doobie not smiling, and Harry watching over us, we have a lot to cheer about. Be Philadelphia fans: keep your heads up, shit talk to those gloating Yankees fans that are about to populate our campus, and never forget what matters more than anything, even championships: heart. Is it April yet?

In other news, god damn it SEPTA this is getting old, and the friggin weekend is coming up in like, 24 hours. Check out this article from the Temple News to hear a lot of your classmates bitching, and rightfully so.

In other news, god damn it Pennsylvania Congress, this not passing our funds thing is getting kind of old, and we've got tuition to pay. This Temple newsroom article discusses how the state has still not approved Temple's $180 million in funds, along with the other state-related schools. They better hurry up and do it, before we vote them out of office in that election that just happened, or whatever.

Oh wait look, we found some good news: Al Golden is up for more coach of the year awards. And that reminds us, now everyone has a free schedule to go cheer on the football team tomorrow night at the Linc. That's right, they play tomorrow. I think a romping of 1-8 Miami(OH) is just what the doctor ordered for that Phillies hangover. You guys do know about Bernard Pierce right?

Weather: Don't let that sunlight fool you, it's not going to be as warm as yesterday. Expect temps in the high 40's, low 50's and some clouds/rain moving in over night.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

First, you've got a deadline to register for a wine tasting with some dude from a wine company. This is great for those who want to get their wine cred up so you can impress everyone at the frat party by ordering a nice glass of Kina Lillet.

For all you poli sci people out there, there is a lecture by progressive(that's putting it lightly) author David Swanson on his book "Daybreak: Undoing the Imperialist Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union." Oh boy.

Who was the real Russell Conwell? How did Temple University come to exist? Who actually cares about these questions? If you answered yes to those three questions, might want to head over to Paley Library at 4 pm, when they're having a little exploration of some archives to learn about Temple's history. We'll be there, riiiightt after our own little wine tasting.

Other stuff:

Party in the PHIL-A-DELPH! Miley Cyrus comes to the Wachovia Center tonight, and tickets start at only 43 bucks. How can you not go?

Because of the Phillies, that's why! Pedro Martinez takes the mound against Andy Petitte at 7:57 in Yankee Stadium tonight, attempting to even the series at 3 games a piece and ignite a god damn firestorm here in Philadelphia.

Oh, and for those who keep running into that husky fellow who swipes meals at the SAC and won't stop talking about the Yankees, we finally said enough is enough yesterday and talked baseball with him. Turns out he doesn't know much at all about baseball, so if so inclined, feel free to talk some trash. Because if you're anything like us, nothing is more satisfying than getting into verbal altercations with lunch people.

So in case you didn't hear, Septa like, went on strike at 3 am this morning, leaving thousands of people, including Temple students, to find their own way around. Something isn't quite right here; let's try and determine where the break in the logic occurs. People who use Septa do not equal people with lots of money. People who work for Septa also do not equal people who make lots of money. People who ride Septa are probably sympathetic to people who work for Septa, in terms of getting screwed by the man every once in a while. People who work for Septa piss off people who ride Septa by deciding at 3 am, before the morning commute, to strike. Well, I think we've found the break in the logic.

So what now? Well, apparently the school is running shuttles up and down the length of Broad Street, although according to people we've spoken to, this BAC post, and this TTN video, they're running late and are often full.

In other news, if you want to read a really confusing article that involves Temple, the military, and clean energy, you may do so here. Something about how a Temple professor is helping the military understand how to get their energy usage under control.

Does anybody know Temple students Kelly Fowler and Erin Fedirko? If so, please give these Yankee fans an earful when you see 'em. Fowler was quoted in this article today saying "half the Phillies fans don't know about the game" and professing her love for the Yanks. She and Fedirko bought $300 tickets off of Stub Hub yesterday morning to go see game 5. Just like the Yankees, lots of spare cash lying around. And just like the Yankees, learning that money doesn't always buy you what you want.

SEPTA Strike on a Sunny Day

Oh and um, SEPTA is on strike. Yea, that would mean no subways, and most trolleys and buses are shutdown. Students who escaped the grime of North Philly for the more "interesting" living in southerly neighborhoods collectively groan.

10-10:30: Online audacity seminar: Ever wish you could strip the vocals out of your favorite songs so you could sing karaoke like an idiot from the comfort of your own bedroom? This freebie will teach you how to use Audacity to do just that.

3-4: For all those full time creative writers out there, good luck making money. For all those people who like to creatively on the side, but are busy with other, money-making stuff, might want to visit this workshop in Tuttleman 201. Learn how to write "short short stories," which are probably infinitely more interesting than clever tweets and fb updates.

The Fightins do their best to give everyone a heart attack, but thanks to Cliff Lee and Chase Utley's MLB record tying 5th postseason homerun, defeat the Spankees 8-6. Now the Phils will have to go back to the Bronx and face 37-year-old Andy Pettite on 3 days rest, followed by C.C. Sabathia on the same. Just please keep Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge away from the mound. Go Phillies.

Other than that, not a particularly big news day.

First check out this article about how congressman Joe Sestak hosted a webinar at the Fox School of Business in which University reps from around the state could tune in to find out the transition to direct lending for all government-financed student loans. What does that mean? We have no clue, but go Temple!

Temple students doing their thing once again. This article mentions how Temple's landscape architecture students are behind big design plans in Cape May. Temple students will be visiting local elementary schools to get the youngsters' opinions on what they want in new parks that will be built. Blank check anyone?

If you're a journalism major and haven't heard about the Philadelphia Initiative for Journalistic Innovation this Saturday, you're definitely going to want to check it out. As seen here, the dudes from Technicallyphilly.com(Temple alums) will be visited, along with a shit load of other successful entrepreneurs. Worried about making money after graduation? Can't say there wasn't anything at Temple to help.

From the Temple newsroom, this article discusses how Temple is hosting latino students from local highschools in an effort to encourage them to consider jobs in the medical field, where that ethnicity is underrepresented. No word on whether or not the students were asked to sign non-disparagement agreements.

Finally, holy shit, Temple football got a vote in the AP poll. That's huge.

7:57: Oh yea, the umm Phillies are playing at Citizen's Bank Park. Hey, they had 12 win streaks of 3 games or more this season. Don't count the Fightin's out til the last out.

Tuesday:

10-10:30: Check out this online class on Audacity from the comfort of your own house, apartment, or shitty dorm room. This will teach you the basics, and concludes with demonstrating how to strip vocals out of music to create your own karoke track. Ok, that's kinda cool.

12-1: You know that one asshole kid in every class who thinks he knows everything from Day 1, and likes to voice all of his/her wrong opinions? Well not that was can attend, but it's nice to know that the faculty are working on how to shut that kid up.

3-4: Flash fiction workshop. Basically, this teaches creative people who have no time to be creative how to be creative when they don't have much time to be creative. Got it? Tuttleman 201.

7: The undefeated Boston Celtics come to town to play the Sixers. Tickets start at $10.

Wha happened?

Well didn't that just ruin the weekend. Things were wonderful at Temple University-- Halloween parties we in full force, with no signs of significant cops/undercovers, football picked up its 6th straight win, in come from behind fashion over Navy to become bowl eligible for the first time since most of us could speak, the 76ers had dispatched the NY Knicks in OT, and the Eagles had put a hurtin' on the Giants. Hell, we even got an extra hour of sleep to beat the Halloween hangovers thanks to daylight savings time (where the hell did that come from anyways)?.

All we needed to make it probably one of the better weekends ever was a series-evening win by big Joe Bla against Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia. The Yankees got the lead early but when Pedro Feliz ripped that 8th inning homerun off of Joba the Hut (does anybody else think this guy looks exactly like Turtle from entourage?) to even the score, you could feel the Fightin' Phils doing their thing. When Brad Lidge got 2 quick outs and 2 strikes on Damon, you could feel the comeback. The Phils would even things 2-2, with Cliff Lee coming to the mound the following night against Burnett, pitching on 3 days rest. Take a 3-2 lead into NY, and anything could happen.

Except of course, none of this happened. What did happen was Brad Lidge, giving up 3 runs and looking like his old Asstro self. We're not countin' the Phils out yet, never will, but god damn if we don't want his head on a platter.

However, there is a world outside of sports:

First, check out this article that discusses how the Union over at TUH is claiming Temple tried to put in a "gag-clause" in their latest contract offering. The clause essentially says that union people can't shit talk on Temple in any way, and it seems pretty shady on paper. However, the University is claiming that it just exists so that Union officials, not individual nurses or employees, can't bad mouth Temple's health systems, as they apparently did this past summer.

Next, check out this article on mental health of college kids. What's going on out there everyone, because it looks like health clinic visits on campuses nationwide are shooting through the roof. The article mentions Temple specifically, as it states that 34 of us were hospitalized last year with mental health conditions. The article goes on to make educated guesses about what is causing it--it's the economy, stupid-- and also mentions that Temple has their shit together because it operates a walk-in clinic. Take care of yourselves and remember: 4 out of 5 doctors recommends the C&W for daily stress relief.

Did you know that if you give kids more fruits and veggies, they'll eat more of them? Imagine that! That's what this study figured out, spending god knows what kind of money.

Ok back the sports: this article served as a quick reminder that the Philadelphia Kixx indoor soccer team is, in fact, playing at the Liacouras Center this year, with their home opener on Jan. 9. Also, in case you didn't hear, Temple's running back Bernard Pierce rushed for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns on Saturday, making him the third leading rusher in the country and putting him up for national player of the week honors. Ok we kinda owe you one of these. Things get hairy when the Phils are in a World Series on Halloween weekend.

First of all, just in time for Halloween weekend, SEPTA decides they're probably going to go on a strike. Yea, that would mean there's a good possibility the orange line will be shut down this weekend. Yea, that would mean you would not be able to use it to go to Halloween parties, places in the city, or the Phillies/Eagles game. Nice.

Also, check out the new opening of the $165 new medical school building today. Hooray Temple! Then check out the hundreds of protesting employees who still don't have a contract and are determined to piss on the parade. Boo Temple!

Going down to the Temple v. Navy game tomorrow? Yea, we didn't think so, but we thought we'd let you know to watch out for the pickpockets anyways. Not that you aren't completely up on your street smarts from living in North Philly anyway.

Yesterday's news, still brought to you with more convenience than a newspaper:

Temple's entrepreneurial spirit is even spreading to the theater department? Do a play that's already been made? Screw that, we'll write our own jawn. That's what spawned "Shot," an original play that is now running through Nov. 13 at Tomlinson. Shot, of course, referring to someone who got shot in North Philadelphia in 1964. OK, not the cleverest of titles, but maybe worth seeing anyways.

Apparently Temple's got organized labor spirit too as this article credits the Student Labor Action Proeject(SLAP) student org. for helping Art Museum guards win a right to unionize. Entrepreneurs and union people, we so tallllenteddd.

Temple keeps up its status of the Beverly Hills of Philadelphia as it was brought up by not one, but two Hollywooders yesterday. First, we finally got to the bottom of this Reese Witherspoon thing with this article about an Alvernia coach selected to play a role in the upcoming movie. Here are the deets:

"Berger filmed for one day at the Temple-Ambler softball field that had been transformed to look like a USA home field for an international game...an upcoming major motion picture starring Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson , Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd."

The second article was an interview with Boondock Saints directer Troy Duffy, who discusses the upcoming sequel to that movie. Duffy and the two main actors (ya know, the Irish dudes) visited the Reel a few weeks back to field questions from students, and Duffy talks about them a bit in this article.

Weather: looks like the weather should make a little improvement today, as you can expect temps to break the 60's and see just a tiny bit of sun today. The main point is it stays fairly warm and dry overnight, so those Halloween costumes you'll be rockin should stay dry. So should Yankee stadium.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

Well first of all there's all sorts of crazy seminars and stuff going on today to celebrate the opening of the new Medical Education and Research Building. But there are way too many big words and crazy medical lingo, so we're just going to assume you already know if you're going.

Author Laura Levinger visits 914 Gladfelter at 11 today to talk about her book "What War?" which focuses on testimonials from survivors of the Guatemalan massacre. Punch and cookies will not be available.

Does your head tilt to the side and eyebrow curiously raise when your prof starts talking about something called "A.P.A. format"? Well then you might want to check out this workshop that teaches all about that pain in the ass style from 3-4. That, or drop out of college. Same end result.

Also, don't forget Temple individual game basketball tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today. If you want to tickets to games like Kansas, Nova, PSU, etc. you should probably get on that. Of course, if you have your wild cherry pass, you're good to go.

Well, if only the World Series started every Wednesday, that would make this day a lot easier to manage.

Weather: Expect very similar weather to yesterday, with the temps hanging around 57 all day and cloud cover, although rain is not as likely. The current predicted weather for Yankee Stadium at the 7:57 pm start time is 52 and cloudy with a 50/50 chance of rain. Fingers crossed.

For all you music producer wannabes out there, definitely want to check out these two workshops today. "Learn how to podcast like a pro" is in the TECH 211 from 1-2, and teaches Garageband, audacity, pro tools, and all that good stuff. A separate session focusing on just Audacity is in the TECH 112 from 2:30-3:30.

For those of you who have realized college is all about networking, but haven't got a clue how to do it, might want to consider this workshop in Mitten 220 at 2.

Oh and there's this like film series thingy at 7 and a chorus singing at 7:30 or something, but we're going to assume you're too busy prepping for the WORLD SERIES so we're just going to subtly sneak those 2 links in there. Done.

Welcome to World Series eve..and boy is shit heating up.

First, if you haven't already seen it, check out the cover of today's New York Post. Yes, that would be Shane Victorino in a skirt. You know, Shane Victorino, the guy who hit a grand slam off C.C. Sabathia, the Yankees Game 1 pitcher, in last year's NLDS. Good idea NYP.

Searching for Temple University also turned up this Philadelphia Inquirer article about why the Yankees are so easy to hate, especially by the scrappy, blue-collar Phillies fans. The article includes insights by Temple prof Emily Sparvero, who essentially says that New York is so easy to hate because of its size and geographic location.

Bernard Hopkins like the Phillies too. Like the t-shirt here? Want some funnier than normal Phillies gear? This site kicks ass.

In other news, this week's Temple News is out on the stands, and it's a good one. Our pick of the week is this article by Valerie Rubinsky that provides a wealth of information and quotes on the ongoing Temple Univeristy Hospital debate/strike/animosities. Is Temple a sketchy, bottom-line driven corporation, or are the Union people making a misinformation cocktail with a splash of sour grapes?

Or perhaps Temple likes money so they can open state-of-the-mo-fuggin-art facilities like this new $3 million Biotechnology research center. Well, when you put it that way...

It's Tuesday, October 27, and there's nothing going on today so we're putting another inspirational Phillies clip for inspiration/filler:

Shitty weather: That would be gray, rainy, and hovering near 57 all day long. Clears up a bit for the evening and night, but the temp. stays right around the same.

Tons of stuff to choose from today, fellow Owls! Oh wait nevermind, there's really only three. And they kinda suck.

First, if you feel like hoofing it out to Ambler, Rina Cutler, the city's transportation/utilities person, will be talking about how to make Philadelphia more sustainable when it comes to moving around. It's a pretty much must see for anyone interested in urban sustainability.

Why does Ambler get to do all the cool stuff? If you're out there, a bus is leaving at 7 pm to go on a walking ghost tour of Philadelphia. Sure it's probably going to be rainy and nobody is going to go, but at $3 that sounds like it would have been an awesome night. Keep this up and we're switching to being a farming major just so to get a piece of the activities over there.

Tonight, at 7:30 in the Rock Hall Auditorium, the Yiddish Choir of Temple will take the stage for their world premiere of singing songs entirely in Yiddish. Where will you be?

Besides that, not much happened today.

We guess it's pretty cool that Al Golden is up for national coach of the year, alongside greats such as Joe-Pa and Urban Meyer.

And we guess it's pretty cool, if not a little nerdy, that the Temple University Concert Choir performed at a live video game concert. We guess.

Oh and the online version of the latest Temple News has started to make its way online, and apparently AEPi's house is haunted by a servant girl who makes fun of people with hairy knuckles? Ok, that's pretty cool.

Can't forget the golf team is in 6th place after day one of the Seascape Collegiate tournament.

Weather: Quite a bit cooler this week, as temps will just barely break into the low 60's today, although it will be mostly sunny. High 40's overnight.

Bunch of deadlines: Thinking about being an RA next year? Yea, better get on that. Want to take part in one of Temple's service immersion programs where you go places and help, you know, people who need help? Better get on that too. Want to learn how to manage your money bank accounts better? Hahaha, like we have money.

Poli sci kids! Check out this campaigns and elections speaker series thing as Dr. Sanbonmatsu of Rutgers talks about women's elections. Just don't try and pronounce that last name. 1-2:30 pm in Gladfelter 914.

Elsewhere: Body world's II opens today at the Franklin Institute. This time it focuses on the brain! For those who don't know, body worlds is an exhibit using real human and animal remains, that have been frozen in time by wizards. Pretty cool.

Get in the spirit of Halloween by taking this walking ghost tour of Philadelphia. Ok, it starts at Cosi. Yes, it's $17 bucks. Didn't say we were going.

October weekend 4 out of 5 is complete. Next up: Halloween!

In news this weekend, Temple football beat up on Toledo 40-24. Freshman ass kicker Bernard Pierce was a bigger beast than ever, as he racked up 212 yards and three touchdowns. This was a big time win as it moved us to 5-2, 4-0 in the MAC, and one win shy of bowl eligibility. We're also starting to get additional national votes on the Harris ratings. Beat Navy this weekend, and we might even seen a few votes on the AP/Coaches poll.

Someone needs to tell that to Greg Eno, a contributor for the Bleacher Report, as he mentioned Temple in this article that completely ripped philly, its sports teams, and fans.

"Philly is also the home of Temple University, which last had a good football team before they came out with electricity, just about."

If you ever need to get your blood going, give that a look.

Good thing there are great journalists like Solomon Jones who know what the real deal is. Check out this article that praises Philly's grit, and talks about why we're the best city. He even mentions those crazy Temple squirrels: "Our city's grit is the very fabric of our city, a fabric so intricately woven that even our wildlife is part of it. I once saw a squirrel pluck the butt of a hoagie out of a trash can on Temple University's campus and munch on it like he was at a lunch counter."

In other news, the winner of the Wolgin Prize was announced late last week. The winner of the prize, which was open to artists all over the globe and prided itself as the world's largest art prize.... was South Philadelphian Ryan Trecartin. Mmmmmm..what's that smell?? I love home cooking!!!

Speaking of home cooking..Dionte, WTF? In case you didn't catch the story by now Dionte Christmas was pulled over for "driving erratically" with heavily tinted windows (read: shady as shit, or DWB, depending on your point of view) and a police search of the car found a gun. Christmas also was driving without a license, and the car was registered to 76er Mareese Speights. Christmas was released on $10,000 bail, and the case is now being investigated. Crime/sports reporters everywhere also spent a better part of their day on Friday attempting to think of clever headlines involving getting coal for Christmas.

In other news, Arlen Specter came to campus. The BAC has a post up about him, and it looks like their code is freakin' out because there's an insanely large picture of him. Just look at that tie, kinda looks like he skinned that fish in the children's book with the shiny scales doesn't it? The post says they got an exclusive interview with the flip-flopping senator, so look out for that in Tuesday's edition.

Finally, take a look at this article about how Center City police kept things much more controlled during the NLCS celebrations. The article mentions how Temple kids still made it down, despite the blockades. Drexel and UPenn though, not so much, as police blocked bridges from West Philly. Haha! Better dig into that trust fund to buy yourself a raft for the World Series.

Another week down, another weekend up. But no Phillies this time? Temple football away? Halloween next weekend? What the hell is there to do? Well...

Weather: Short of a tsunami or snow storm..this is about the worst thing you can be greeted with when signing on weather.com

So what's that mean. Well today is alright with a high of 60, low of 53 and possibly some shower laters. However tomorrow is gonna be rainy as hell, but around the same temperature. Looks like the weather will clear up just in time for the TECH center on Sunday, with a high of 63 and low 42.

FRIDAY:

12-1: Women's leadership series at Ambler. Check out the name of this presentation: "When life gives you lemons and everyone is making lemonade-- make a margarita!" Now that's a motto we can agree with.

12:30: Men's soccer vs. St. Bonaventure at the Ambler sports complex. Seriously, we just can't take that school seriously with a mascot called the Bonnies.

1-2: A lecture by Ryan Trecartin, fresh off his Wolgin Arts Prize victory and $150,000 back account boost. Afterward, he will be buying everyone drinks at the Draught Horse. Right, Ryan?

3: Women's soccer vs. Charlotte. That would be the Charlotte 49ers, named for the infamous Carolina gold rush of 1942.

4-6: Forum with Senator Arlen Specter. That's right, the magic man himself will be in the SAC 200 to answer any and all questions from students. One of our staff has an ax to grind and would like to point out that Specter dodged his question 4 years ago, and when asked about Bush shitting on everything in America, started talking about Iraq. After this forum, Specter will then go 5 rounds with Geert Wilders in a sockem bopper bout for the ages.

7:00: Ambler is doing haunted hayrides. Damn it Ambler, stop doing all the fun shit!

Saturday:

12: Dodgeball tourny!! Prizes for best uniforms! Benefit kids! Alriiighttt.

3: Tyler Perry's "Laugh to Keep from Crying" comedy routine at the Liacouras Center. Tickets are $50 a pop though.

4:30: TU trip to Haunted Bates motel. $10 bucks gets you a trip to the Bates hotel, which includes haunted house, hay ride, and corn maze and also a meal ticket. Vodka and orange juice in a water bottle not included. BYOB.

Ok so the weekend started a day early for the C&W staff this week. Our apologies.

But the Phillies are the 2009 National League Champions! Here are 8 things we noticed. Also, we totally stole these photos from Temple News photographers Kevin Cook, Tho Nguyen, and Walbert Young, so make sure you check out their awesome slide show here.

1. The Phillies are amazing
-After Rollins' game winning 2-out double in the bottom of the ninth to win game 4, everyone could taste the World Series again. As we joined together on a Wednesday night, the taste of a second straight world series and natty light in our mouths, the Phils never let us down. From the moment J-Werth hit that first inning 3-run bomb, we knew we were going.

2. The cops at Temple are not so amazing
- Sure enough, they blocked off Cecil B. Moore, which was the first lame thing. Unfortunately, they didn't block off 15th street, so it wouldn't have done much to prevent a march to city hall except that...

3. Temple students are kind of lazy
- As most of them just kind of hit that police wall, jumped around for a bit, and then found their way to Temple Star or 4th meal. Perhaps the police were banking on this factor, and if they were..cha-ching.

4. Center city police, on the other hand, meant fuckin' business
- Partial riot gear, extra zip ties on the hip in case they needed to make multiple arrests, tazers, breaking bottles that littered the streets to avoid them getting tossed, freakin horses, which reminds us that

5. Horses poop, big time

6. Yes, they really greased the poles

7. Everyone really, really hates the Yankees
- Fuck the Yankees chants almost outnumbered lets go Phillies chants

8. Everyone is really, really hungry for another World Series Championship
-But some were hungrier for Temple star

In other news...

There's still some buzzing from nutso Geert Wilder's visit this past Monday. What we didn't know were how many clever lines Temple students delivered:

"Members of All Sides, an organization that seeks to promote peace between Israel and Palestinians, held pink pom-poms and shouted, 'Hey Hey, HO, HO, this racist bull----'s got to go.'"

"Before he was escorted out, the last student allowed to address Wilders said: Clearly fascism wasn't defeated, because if it was, a genocide-loving racist clown like you still wouldn't have anything to say.'"

In sad news, Christmas was cancelled. Or at least cut from the 76er's roster. This probably means Europe for the former Temple b-ball star. Let's keep our fingers crossed to see him make it to the NBA in the near future.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

Well you're not going if you aren't already there, but there's an interesting conference going on in the Student Center right now about women balancing their families with their careers, and features just about every prominent woman at the University. Yes, Hart is there. You go girls.

Do you want to study abroad, but have been too lazy to go to the first hundred info sessions this year? Well good news Ferris, they're having a big one today from 10-2 in the Tuttleman lobby, where reps from all over the University and outside businesses will have info for you on studying abroad.

It's sustainability day! Yay Earth! From 11-2 at the Bell Tower there will be all sorts of student organizations, Temple offices, and city groups doing god knows what to celebrate the day. Check it out if you hear mother nature calling. Also, if you're at Ambler, you can skip class to play around in the Woodland Garden all day.

Other cool stuff:

Poet Peter Straub will be in Anderson 821 at 3 pm today presenting "Celebrating Foreboding." Yea, no clue.

God mad roller hockey skillz? Prove it at the PAV tonight from 7-10 at their tournament. Hoot..... Hoot.... Hoot..Hoot..Hoothoothoot.

Don't forget the Phillies take on the Dodgers at 8:07 tonight in an attempt win their second straight National League Pennant. Cole Hamels takes the mound, and we got a feelin' he's going to right the ship tonight. Hamels, rhymes with Camels, on humpday? Meant to be.

Make sure you peep this announcement from the University that explains they, along with the city, aren't bull shitting when it comes to celebrations. It states that the city will not allow people to march to city hall. This could get messy.

Temple was at the center of some big, even international news today as Dutch politician Geert Wilders presented to a packed Anderson 17. Pretty epic stuff; protesters outside, secret service looking dudes walking around, cheers and jeers as he took the stage. Then, he spoke, with his funny accent and crazy, eminem-gone-mad hair-do:

"Where Islam sets roots, freedom dies,"

"our Western culture is far better than the Islamic culture and we should defend it."

"If the spread of Islam continues unabated in the Western world, 'you might at the end of the day lose your Constitution.'"

In the words of Happy Gilmore, "psycho." Check out this Temple News article about the TSG meeting Monday that condemned his visit, and this letter to the editor from Senate pres. Jeff Dempsey for more backlash to Geert's visit.

In other news, Temple again brings home the hardware for being so damn entrepreneurial, this time from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) awards banquet. Temple won honors for "Outstanding Contributions to Advance the Discipline of Entrepreneurship." Good stuff TU.

Unfortunately, for every entrepreneur Temple puts out, we have recent grads like Jason Fanelli who get a job managing a Gamestop. Or, maybe that truly has been the journalism grad's life goal. Yup, we're sure that's it. Please God, let me get a job after graduation.

In sports, Temple football really did win four in a row. We're not crazzzyyyy!! Check out this blog post that goes over how big of an achievement it really is, as it mentions that the last time Temple pulled this off, the Cosby show was the most watched show on TV.

Ok, how did we miss that the field hockey team's 2-1 win was over NUMBER 10 Umass this past weekend? We don't know, but time to give credit where credit is due. Way to kick ass, girls.

Weather: Sunny and reaching into the low 60's by lunch time, then dipping to the low 50's overnight.

Don't you absolutely hate when you write a book and sign with a publisher, only to have them take all of the rights to your work? FML right? Well well, this info session at the TECH 111 at noon will teach all the tricks to show those evil publishers what's up. We're excited too.

Rome. It's a city in Italy. Pizza, vespas, euro-mullets, 16 drinking age, old stuff. Wanna go? 2 p.m. in Tuttleman 200.

Herrreee comes Geerty. The Dutch Politician of all Dutch Politicians will be speaking in Anderson 17 at 7 p.m. There will be security guards present, and plenty of proteste rs too . Fortunately, we have been told that the cool old police officer who drives up and down Liacouras Walk all day in his cop cart will be there, so shit shouldn't pop off. He's our hero.

In off campus stuff: David Cross at the University of the Arts. 8 p.m. $35.

In other news, controversy, controversy, and more controversy.

First, we have controversial Dutch Parliamentarian Geert Wilders coming to campus tomorrow. Wilders is known for calling Islam a violent religion and being borderline bat-shit crazy. However, supporters of Wilder are saying that his opinions fall within free speech. TUPurpose, which apparently is a student organization here on campus, is sponsoring his presentation, and to much protest. At today's TSG senate meeting, the student body voted to condemn his visit, and protests were held outside. Security will be ramped up for tomorrow's presentation, for which students in TUPurpose say they have received threatening messages.

Remember professor Marc Lamont Hill? You know that prof who was at Temple for the past four years, and appeared on Fox news to talk about hip-hop and all sorts of other stuff? Yea well he went to Columbia and apparently got fired from the Fox News pundit team, at least according to this right wing article.

In state politics, Rendell is working for his money, per this article that discusses how he is making a push this week to pass casino legislation, so TU can finally get its dough. So not only will your rich roommate's grandma be supplying you with guys with cookies during the holidays, but she'll also be funding your future college education when she hits the slots on the weekends. Yay roommate's grandma!

In sports, word has it that Bernard Pierce may be OK. Preliminary reports coming out now are saying that he's questionable for Saturday's game against Toledo, but shouldn't miss any more than that. Keep your fingers crossed.

The U.S. really needs to look into a three day weekend. Utah does it!

Luckily, the weather looks like it fights back a little bit this week, so it ain't all bad.

Monday: What an awful Monday, there really is nothing going on. Except Big Joe Blanton and the Phillllllliessss of course.

5:15-8:30: Monday Night Film series in Tuttleman 101. This week's movie is "Indictment: The McMartin Trial." What the hell is that, you may ask? The hell if we know, we respond.

8:07: Phillies vs. Dodgers on TBS.

Tuesday:

10-2: The Marine Corp returns fire on the Peace corps' visit last week with a table of their own in Tuttleman's lobby. Hippie or jarhead, Temple's got postgrad plans for everyone!

2-2:50. Want to go to Rome? Attend this info session and stumble across $20,000, and you're good to go!

5:30-6:30: Haven't you always wondered how to create and exhibition in a museum? Ya know, how in the world would you make old objects interesting? Well put your worries at ease by attending an info session with Dr. Helen Evans, curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Or, simply mimic the exhibit shown here:

Wednesday:

10-2: Study abroad fair! Everything you've ever wanted to know about how to visit places that you probably never will. Tuttleman lobby.

11-2: Campus sustainability day at the Bell Tower. This actually sounds worth your time, as a plethora(love using that word in a sentence) of green organizations from around campus and the city will all unite by the Bell Tower and.... I dunno, save the world! Special guest appearances by Captain Planet and his son, Al Gore.

3-5: Poets and writers series in Anderson 821. Wednesday's session is titled "Celebrating Foreboding." Erm...what? Future sessions to be titled "Anxiety is Fun" and "Disease? Hooray!"

7-10: Roller Hockey Tournament at the PAV. Ok, that sounds pretty awesome.

Thursday: Thursday can wait til this afternoon, our classes cannot.

Very nice.

Temple football rallies to beat Army 27-13 in rainy, gritty football game. Lupe Fiasco brings the Liacouras Center to its feet. The PhiLees blow out the Dodgers 11-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the NLCS. The Eagles lose, but so do the Giants. We'll take it.

Unfortunately, the football game also came with some costs. Freshman RB/star player/ass kicker Bernard Pierce was taken out of the game in the second quarter after a hard hit to his upper body during a sideline tackle. No official reports yet, but unofficial ones range from mild stinger up to concussion or a busted shoulder. Pierce is the top rusher in the MAC and second highest rushing freshman in the country, and we kinda, like, need him.

But, we got a vote in the Harris top 25 poll. That's nuts.

In other news, check out this editorial from the Inquirer that discusses Temple's recent community service award. It essentially just lists Temple among schools who are doing good work to help out the local community, and that's a "like d'uh" thing. However, many of the comments on the story echo the sentiments of this letter to the editor, which states that Temple was slighted by being ranked lower than Penn and Drexel. Essentially, many of the statements say that Temple sacrifices a higher percent of funds to community building, helps out in better ways such as offering affordable education to city residents, and do so despite being in a much more unfriendly environment than the west Philadelphia schools. We say it's all a good thing, and that Philly schools all kick ass at serving the community. Why turn it into a pissing match?

In other news, Temple Harrisburg also helps people in the community out. Our capital city campus recently hosted a forum on crime that attempted to come up with ways that communities and law enforcement can work together in order to curb crime.

In Temple sports that aren't called football, women's soccer picked up two losses, 0-1 to La Salle and 0-2 to Fordham; women's v-ball picked up two wins, 3-2 to Fordham and 3-1 over Rhode Island; and men's soccer beat UMass 1-0 but lost to Rhode Island 1-4.

4:07: PHILLIES v. DODGERS, ROUND TWO BABY!

4:30-7:30: "Taste of Temple." A bunch of good food joints around campus are running special discounts at this time in honor of homecoming and people coming back and stuff. Whatever the cause man, cheap food= awesome.

7 p.m.: After the Phils play, you can head over to McGonigle to see the v-ball team take on the Fordham Hams.

7 p.m.: Temple Men's Rugby takes on St. Joseph's under the lights at Finnesey Field on St. Hoe's Main Campus. Both teams have 3-0 records and this game will determine the #1 seed for playoffs. That would be at 5600 City Ave.

8 p.m.: Cherry and White Ball. College prom anyone? Tickets are 15 bucks at Mitten Hall and you can a mystery dinner and activity. Yea....

8 p.m.: For those of you out at Ambler, make sure you check out your homecoming ceremony/party thing at Bright Hall. Fashion shows, martial arts, drama sketches, crowning of the King and Queen, food, all that good stuff.

Does anyone else love the fightin' Phils? The defending world champions showed exactly why they hold that title last night as they downed the Dodgers 8-6, setting off a Thursday night celebration in the C&W offices that pushed this news post til today. From the opening moments when Victorino was picked off at first and jawed with catcher Russell Martin, to the late game slug fest that saw the Phillies come out on top, the Phillies proved without a doubt that they have that same fire. Make sure you catch today's game 2 at 4:07 as Pedddroooooo takes the mound.

In other news, hockey stick chair! Yea this doesn't really have anything to do with Temple except that it was made by freshman Andrew Campenella when he was still in high school, but what the hell it's Friday right?

In um, much more serious news, check out this post from "The Jawa Report"? It deals with an ongoing debate here at Temple over upcoming College Republicans guest speaker Geert Wilders. In short, Wilders is a controversial speaker who the College Republicans say is a critic of Islam and terrorist groups, and who the Muslim Student Association says is a hate-monger that has been banned from the UK. The MSA wants him banned from Temple, while the College Republicans and Horowitz Freedom Center, who is also sponsoring his speech, say to hell with that, first amendment biatch.

Speaking of political stuff, check out this article on an upcoming rally for single-payer health care in Harrisburg. Patricia Eakin, ER nurse at Temple and president of PASNAP (whatever that is) will be one of the featured speakers.

In sports news, props to former Temple b-ball stand out Mark Macon, who is now the interim head coach of men's b-ball at Binghamton University. OK, he replaced a coach that messed up with NCAA violations and got canned, and he might be replaced by a permanent head coach, but he's the man for at least a little while.

In other sports news, we know what you're thinking. This weather sucks and there is no way in hell I'm going to the homecoming football game tomorrow. Well apparently the athletic department also knows what you're thinking, because they've lowered club tickets from $45 to $25, to be purchased at the Linc box office tomorrow. That's great, but still about $20 over what the average college kid can afford.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

Hey hey the Peace Corp is on campus today! So for those of you who will be graduating in May and have no idea what the hell you're doing, might want to check it out. Table in TLC lobby from 1:30-3:30 and info session in 300AB from 4-5.

Temple Night Owt: 7-11 on Liacouras Walk. We already highlighted this one in the weekly outlook. Food, drink, moon bounce boxing, video game simulator, man hunt, wing eating contest, and lots and lots of rain! We'll try and find out if there are any plans for what to do if it rains. "Temple Night In" just doesn't have the same ring.

Other stuff:

Don't forget today is the Cecil B. Moore farmer's market, from 2-6 at Cecil B and Park walk. They are always under that tent so we assume it's rain or shine? Mennonites ain't afraid of no rain.

Think disco is dead? Think again. Temple IBC is reviving it with this learn to dance like the 70's class tonight from 8-10. We don't know why, but they are.

Phils v. Dodgers at 8 p.m.? Check. Always Sunny in Philadelphia at 10 p.m.? Check. Shitty rain all through the night? Check. Creepy guy with yellow teeth walking the streets? Check. Great night to grab a bottle of rum and stay the hell in? Check.

And the sun sets on the first chilly Wednesday of the year, leaving homecoming weekend just around the corner at Temple.

And, damn, was it a busy news day.

First, we finally got the facts straightened out about this whole Reese Witherspoon at Ambler thing. Turns out there was some bad information, and Reese will actually be there this coming Monday to shoot a scene for a new movie. However, according the philly.com blog where we are getting this information, security will be tight and you might need some binox just to catch a glimpse. And that would be creepy.

Secondly, here is the article on the woman who was robbed and sexually assaulted on Fontain(between 16th and 17th). She said the asshole had bad teeth. BAD TEETH! Once again, she was not a Temple student, but that makes no difference. Don't forget it's dangerous out there, keep your eyes open!

In other news, check out this Inquirer article about freshman running back Bernard Pierce. The story discusses BP's up-and-down background and how he came to be a rising star on the team. Did you know he is the first Temple freshman running back to ever run for 100 yards in three games? And we're only halfway through the season. Kid's got wheeeels.

Temple and its entrepreneurial journalist alums find the spotlight once again. This time it's Nieman Journalism Lab of Harvard writing about the guys over at Technicallyphilly.com, all of them Temple grads. For those interested in journalism start-ups, this is a must read article.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the Liacouras Center was the home turf of the Philadelphia Kixx soccer team? Well starting January 9, that's what it's gonna be. The indoor soccer team will play their eight home games at the LC, and season tickets are on sale now. Oléeeeeeeeee Oléeeee oléeee oléeeeee.

Peep this article about a local highschooler who is putting on a big time production for her first play. Her play, "Requiem for the Fallen" was selected from like 760 entries to get funding. What's this gotta do with Temple? Well the actors are all Temple undergrads, and the play will be at Tomlinson Theater this Friday and Saturday. That's what, smarty pants.

Finally, we have to apologize to the women's volleyball team for missing their 3-0 shwooping of La Salle last night. Way to kick some Big 5 ass, ladies.

Conquering humpday

It's Wednesday, October 14, and the C&W hates humpday. Get through this, and the weekend is yours! Luckily, the first campus bar crawl is going on tonight, so if you have proper identification you can start the weekend as little early.

Weather: That semi-warm weather we had yesterday has gone away, replaced by the low 50's today, and then comes the rain overnight.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

Homecoming pep rally: At the Bell Tower from 12-4. There's gonna be the Diamond Band. And the Diamond Gems. And the cheerleaders. And the football team. All in your way as your running late to your 1:00 class in Gladfelter. The Cherry Crusade will be there doing face painting as well, so make sure you don't shower for three days so you can go to the homecoming game in smelly style.

For those who want to get their mad tech skillz uped today, there are two workshops to help you. If you want to "podcast like a pro" and learn how to use audio programs, too bad, that was at 9 am. 9 am?! What are they trying to do, keep that shit a secret?

However, you still have time to make the 10:30 music editing workshop in the TECH 109 at 10:30.

Well ya see, we had the blog post typed up, but our dog ate it, so we had to start all over again and that's why it's late. True story.

Anyways, it's Tuesday night, and Owlsports.com has yet to change that glaring grammatical error. How long will it last? Only time will tell.

Guess who made the Temple News???? We didddd. That's right, right up there next to the compost pile article, and not too far from the caged poultry article. Shout out to author Matt Petrillo for inkin' (typin'?) a good one.

In other Temple News news, check out this scathing letter to the editor by College Republicans president Barry Scatton. Scatton just absolutely rips the TSG-proposed $5 green fee on everyone's tuition, pretty much on all accounts. He says that it's founded on bad democratic principles, is unnecessary, and doesn't make any sense.

"Lastly, the idea that Temple can’t pay for its own light bulbs is the most ridiculous idea conjured up since Michael Dukakis’ prison furlough program for first-degree murderers" says Scatton.

Ooooooook. We're going to go ahead and let the appropriate entities fire-back, we'll be weighing in on this shortly thereafter.

Homecoming Walk & Run: Campus safety services is putting on this little shindig in honor of homecoming, and, ya know, personal health. The starting place is 13th and Berks Streets, and then 1k walk starts at noon with the 5k run at 12:30. Trophies will be provided to the winners. Refreshments will be provided to the losers.

Best decorated room contest: Want a bunch of strange people to walk through your dorm room, examine your shit, and then judge you for it? Well it's your lucky today because you can still register for this contest if you live in one of the dorms. Word on the street is that they're handing out a bottle of Bacardi Raz to the winners.

Ok so this Blake Mycoskie dude seems pretty legit and he's speaking tonight at 7 p.m. in the SAC 200. He started TOMS shoes in 2006, and has given like 140,000 pairs of shoes to children in need ever since. Bill Clinton even praised him for being such a great, smart guy, and also donated several pairs of high heels. Mycoskie is going to be giving an inspirational speech, so might wanna check this one out fo' rill.

The C&W would just like to take a moment and congratulate the Philadelphia Phillies for winning the National League Divisional Series in classic phightin' phils fashion. Bring on the Dodgers. For those wondering, it appeared relatively quiet on Temple's campus tonight after the win. I think we all expect to see much more from our world champion Phillies.

In other news, Temple's community service efforts paid off, as we were listed on a national honor roll for Universities who give back to local communities. The downside? UPenn took home first place and Drexel also made the ranked list. We'll get 'em next year.

In some more kinda bad news, p hillyist.com ripped into the Wolgin Art competition today. Their main gripes were that the panel didn't follow guidelines in selecting the competitors. The prize was supposed to be for "emerging artists," and their post claims that the artists selected are already well established, and goes on to condemn pretty much everyone involved. Art wars, round two?

Also, check out this article about Temple alum/football stand out/super bowl champion/business owner Raheem Brock. You know that wingstop over at Avenue North? Yea, he owns that jawn, and is in the process of opening another one in Philly. Making the Cherry and White proud, Raheem.

Speaking of Temple football, peep this article on Jaiquawn Jarrett taking home MAC defensive player of the week honors. The dude had 9 tackles, 5 of them solo, two picks, a fumble recovery, and a break-up. For those who don't know, that's friggin' nuts. Congrats and thanks for the win dude.

Prof David Jacobs, UFO extraordinaire, at it again. This time the "alien abductions and hybrid" expert is attending the Pittsburgh UFO Conference this weekend. And we're not talking Prius-hybrids, we're talking alien human baby-hybrids. So glad this guy is a teacher here.

Here's your weekend news, brought to you in delayed fashion by the Philadelphia Phillies, Denver, Colorado, and 30 degree weather!

So how many of you have transferred in to Temple only to have a shit-load of your credits not count? For the rest of you, how many times have you heard your friends complain about that? Well rejoice, Temple has joined a state-wide "transfer and articulation system," discussed in this article on Pennsylvania's education budget. We have unethically lifted the important section here:

"In addition, the budget legislation includes a dramatic expansion of
Pennsylvania's successful Transfer & Articulation System, which ensures that
students receive the maximum possible credits when they move from one college
to another. Nearly 3 in 5 college students start at one institution and finish
at another, yet loss of credit when they transfer drives up tuition costs for
Pennsylvania families.

Under the new law, students will be able to transfer from community colleges
to the State System and earn full credit entering as a university junior and,
for the first time, Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh and Temple
University will participate in the state's transfer system by agreeing to
accept and fully recognize 30 course credits in time for the next academic
year."

How many of you have gotten a parking ticket, or one, or two, or twenty, from the Philadelphia Parking Authority? How many of you have a shit-ton of your friends complain about them? Who hates the PPA? So does the Drexel student who penned this article that discusses the evil empire that is the PPA, even so far as going to call them "gestapo" and "zombies." Nazi zombies? The article includes a quote from Temple's own Sean Feely, who correctly identified the PPA as "probably corrupt" and talks about how he uses his bike instead. Temple University students: mean and green, baby.

This Temple study found that teenagers lack emotional responsibility. Nooooooo way!!?! Seriously though, its findings were a bit more interesting than that, finding that higher levels of reasoning develop before emotional maturity, explaining why smart kids do dumb things.

I guess somebody let Philly.com in on the Wolgin Award, because they just released this lengthy article reviewing the competition and offering some in-depth description of the exhibits. According to the article, the exhibits are " attracting a steady stream of visitors, many of them students." Really? Please cite sources. Either way, the article puts a much more interesting spin on the exhibit, which makes us, you know, actually want to see it.

Check out this op-ed by Temple University associate professor Jason Del Gandio as he sounds off on why Obama doesn't deserve the Nobel peace prize. Angry, crazy right-winger, you may be asking? Nope, clear-headed liberal who doesn't think his dude has done enough yet. Little lonely at the top Obama? It's ok, play basketball!

In sporting news..TEMPLE FOOTBALL HAS A WINNING RECORD. Holy shit! The Owls pulled out an ugly 23-19 win over 0-6 Ball State on Saturday afternoon, but no matter as it is the Owls third straight win, giving them a 3-2 winning record for the first time since about the invention of the Temple T. In other sports news, women's soccer and men's soccer picked up W's, 3-2 over Duquesne and 2-1 over St. Hoe's, respectively. Field Hockey lost 4-0 to the St. Joe's Faux and women's soccer also lost to St. Bonaventure 2-1. Somewhere, people played golf.

Off campus: Terror behind the walls starts up tonight at the Eastern State Penitentiary. Tickets start at $20. Wasn't that scary in years past, but who knows, maybe they stepped up their game?

Saturday:

"Pinkout" Temple football game vs. Ball State. Lincoln Financial Field, 1 p.m. Ya ya Temple football broke our hearts by losing to 'Nova, but they're going for their first winning record in 19 years tomorrow against 0-5 Ball State. Plus, portions of the ticket sales go to fighting breast cancer. Plus, the first 5,000 fans get little noise maker thingies. Plus you get to wear pink without looking like an idiot. Cool?

OR you can go learn about bees at Ambler at the first annual Southeastern Pennsylvania Honey Bee symposium. You know you wanna go. Here's to hoping irony makes an appearance and at least one person gets stung.

Off-campus: Not an overly loaded Saturday, but you've got the Mars Volta at the TLA, the Flyers against those Mighty Ducks of Anaheim at the Wachovia Center @ 7, and of course the Phils taking on the Rockies, for which you will probably want to watch with a drink on the rocks. No Coors this weekend people, that's bad karma.

Sunday:
In case you have too much fun at the bee fest and end up staying the night at Ambler, might wanna catch women's soccer vs. Duquesne at the Ambler sports complex @ 1.

If you really want to see "Sweet Charity," Sunday at 2 p.m. is your last chance, so go!

That, or tailgate the 1 p.m. Eagles game vs. those god awful Tampa Bay Buckaroos.

Video game nerds, do not miss this shindig at the Kimmel Center on Sunday at 3:00. Live performances of sound tracks, such as Final Fantasy and Halo. People getting called on stage to do live battles with other gamers. Live actors doing god knows what. Mario. Ya, totally worth the $35-60 a ticket for true fans.

Also, check out the Swap-O-Rama on Lombard street from 12-5 if you've got some old duds you're looking to swap. Hundreds of people show up with the clothing they don't want anymore and swap/trade/barter/whatever ya call it with everyone else, plus get tips on how to revitalize old stuff. Hooray for doing cool stuff.

We know we haven't posted. Sorry, we're college kids too! Luckily, the news doesn't stop for us...

First, we've got an award to give out. We need to crown the first "Temple's Biggest Asshole Alumni," a distinction given to the worst alumni Temple has to offer. Bill Cosby? Nah. Bob Saget? NOO! Dr. Christine Daniel? Bingo. This med school graduate was just arrested in California for offering a bogus cancer treatment, in which she promised a 60% cure rate and raked in over $1,000,000. At least 3 dozen people who followed her false instructions died, a number of whom took her option instead of normal treatment. If convicted of fraud, she could face up to 80 years. Latteerrr Christineee.

Thankfully there is this article on Hall & Oates to remind us that not all Temple alumni are really weird or pseudo-murderers.

"We are of course talking about pop/rock/soul virtuoso, John Oates. He is 50% of the most successful duo of all time, Hall and Oates. John along with Daryl Hall met at Temple University, where they formed the union."

In other news, the Liacouras Center continues its big week in the media, as it's now drawing attention for the December 2nd boxing match headed by Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and Enrique Ornelas. The fight will be televised nationally on the Versus network, giving our arena some great exposure. Now, about getting a UFC/WEC here...

The Wolgin Arts contest is starting to draw some attention, as it is featured in th is artinfo.com article. The article goes through an in-depth analysis of the award, competitors, and their work, and is definitely worth checking out for anyone interested. Did you know Jack Wolgin, who's the man behind the competition and it's $150,000 prize, is the dude who made that giant clothes pin? And we're talking about the one in Center City, not the Bell Tower.

The Broad&Cecil again has a good post about Philly happening, as they have alerted everyone that the Philly sales tax increased from 7% to 8%. Think that's a bunch of bull? Fight the power and take one penny from the "take a penny-leave a penny" tray for every dollar you spend. The C&W... providing great tips for college kids since 2009.

Weather: Weather looks like it's holding up pretty decently, with temperatures in the mid to high 60's and sunny by day, falling to the high 50's overnight.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

Today is the deadline for a submission for Fox' annual innovation award thingy. $2,500 in prizes are up for grabs. So if you have any worthwhile innovations just lying around, ya know buried in your dirty laundry or something, might want to think about submitting it.

Hey upperclassmen, still want a job after you graduate? Attending this career expo from 12-4 in the SAC 200 might help. This is a serious one; juniors and seniors only, professional dress required, and the jobs will be pro-internships and full-time positions.

If you have some time to spare between 12:30 and 1:50 might want to stop by by the 10th floor of Gladfelter for a presentation on Georgia O'Keefe, the famous 1920 artists who did stuff like the painting shown here.

Also if you have time, stop by and see the new Temple Community Gardens at 11th and Berks. Check out this interesting article from the Temple News highlighting just how much went into the construction and creation of this garden.

Don't forget your usual Thursday happenings, the oh, so fun HIV testing in the lower level of Mitten Hall from 10-2 and the Cecil B. Moore farmer's market from 2-6.

Congrats, the worst is over. Tomorrow is Thursday, and you've made it to the college weekend!

You're also ugly! Or so says a new study ranking major U.S. cities in several different categories, which we found via this BAC post today. It's okay, we're also cultured...everybody loves a cultured person!

In other news, check out this story about Temple University teaming up with St. Luke's hospital to open up a new medical school in Lehigh county in the summer of 2011. So what does that all mean for Temple students? Not a clue!

Did you know Cirque du Soleil is coming to Temple University from October 13-16th? That would be next Tuesday through Friday. They're performing "Alegria," which is apparently one of their most popular productions. Peep this article for more details. How much, you may be asking? Ooo, only $45- $95 for adults. D'oh!

Want to be a water boy/girl for the women's basketball team? The athletics site anno unced that they're looking for a "scout team" of full time Temple students to "participate in drills with the players, receive instruction from the coaching staff(get the water), and simulate opponent plays." Sounds like a barrel of laughs!

Last not but least, if you have some time to kill and haven't looked recently, check out the Temple Times website, as they have just posted a bunch of interesting enough articles. It's Wednesday, October 7th, and it's friggin' humpday.

Weather: Appropriately, the weather has taken a turn for the worse. Cloudy and windy in the mid 60's by day, clear and cool in the low to mid 50's by night.

Have trouble managing your time? Get stressed out and lose sleep because of it? Yea, us too! Might wanna check out this 11 a.m. workshop in Suite 101 of the Academic Resource Center to learn out to manage your time more effectively. Then again, that would require time management to go to. Might be screwed here.

Poli sci peeps, we have a juicy discussion going on today: "Why the Reed Rules?: The Post-Reconstruction South, Republican Party-building, and Congressional Development." Given by a guest lecturer from Swathmore, in Gladfelter 914 at 1 p.m.

Opening of the Temple Community Gardens! Yup, the ribbon will be cut on the new gardens at 2:30 today, so make sure you stop by afterwards and check it out.

Are you a slob when you eat? Would you scare off potential employees by ordering a hotdog from the children's menu and then proudly displaying it as you chew? Check out this etiquette dinner, where they will rap your knuckles with a ruler every time you mess up and whip you into proper shape. $15 bucks gets you the three course meal and instruction, at 5 pm in Mitten Hall.

Other stuff going on:
PHILLLLLLLIEEESSS!! The Phils open their 2009 postseason campaign at home tonight against the wildcard Colorado Rockies. Lee will get the start in game one, as Charlie says he is a bit fresher than Cole Hamels. The Phils could use some revenge against the Rockies after they swept them from the 2007 NLDS, so Go Phillies! Game time is 2:37 on TBS.

Also, Councilwomen Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez of the 7th District will be on campus to talk on Latino issues as part of Latino Heritage Month tonight. She'll be in the SAC 217CD at 7 pm, so stop by if that's your thing.

And just like that, another day down, and we're half way to the college weekend. You hang in there Owls, and before you know it the second week of 1/3 semester midterms will be gone and Thursday will greet you with those loving, drunken arms.

No ground-shaking news tonight, but a few things worth noting.

First, Temple's name turned up in an article from the The Local of Pratt Institute, NY as they discussed a new policy restricting access to their campus to local residents. Temple was commended for allowing community members access to our campus, and creating plans to further integrate them, such as the new public access library being planned. Also, guys who wrote this story, if you realize the wording of your article might be construed as racist, it's best to take it out, not just strike a line through it. We can still see it. Lolz.

Also, check out this article about Ambler student Nicholas Fountain running for state office at the ripe old age of 22. That's what we're talking about peeps, fight the system and go for your dreams. It doesn't matter that you're running for a Republican seat! Does it??

Also, if you noticed the number of people wearing Gandhi tee's on campus to be slightly higher than normal, that's because this past Saturday was the "Be the Change" community service day, honoring that great man. Temple's South Asian student organizations helped out in the efforts and got themselves some recognition for it, and apparently t-shirts as well.

Finally, and again, the latest edition of the Temple News came out today, anal bongs and all, so make sure ya check it out.

Ok so we've got the details on the homecoming concert with Lupe Fiasco and Asher Roth. Tickets are on sale now, and they cost $16 for students and $21 for general admission, including the processing fee (bull shit). Doors open at 7:30, and the show, if you can call Asher Roth that, starts at 9:00.

In our perusing the Liacouras Center site, we also crawled out from under our metaphorical rock and saw that Bob Dylan is coming to the Liacouras Center on Monday, November 9 as part of his fall U.S. tour. You know you guys can let us know when this stuff is going down, right? Tickets are $53 for general admission and $38 for the student section, and go on sale next Monday, the 12th, at 10 a.m. h00t h00t.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:
Author David Lida will be coming to campus today to talk about his book, "First Stop in the New World: Mexico City." This book offers a contemporary look at Mexico City and all of its components, good and bad (mostly bad). 12:30 in Anderson 821.

If you're a pre-nursing major and don't know what the hell you're doing when it comes to applying for upper-level programs, the selection process, and other important stuff you may want to go to one of two information sessions today to find out: The first at 11 am, and second at 3 pm, both in suite 101 of the Academic Resource Center.

If you're an anyhing major and don't know what the hell you're doing when it comes to networking, you may want to attend this 4:30 workshop that'll teach you how to network and the do's and don't involved. In the SAC 200.

In other stuff, make sure you pick up a copy of the latest Temple News, out today.

Also, Tuesday is $6 movie ticket day at the Pearl, so bring your student ID and pay what you did regularly three years ago. Here are the movies and showtimes if anyone is interested.

Monday Night

See that wasn't so bad? Monday is dunzo!

Today was like celebrity day at Temple University. First, Michael Dell, yes thee Michael Dell, CEO of Dell computers, gave a speech at Alter hall to many business students. In his speech, explained that his company is currently developing microchips that will be planted into everyone's brains, and coupled with Google maps, will give everyone built in GPS.

Ok he didn't say that, but word has it that he was accepting resumes for internships. And that's pretty cool too.

As if that wasn't enough celeb for Temple for one day, Senator Casey decided to pay a visit as well! He met with students and experts to discuss how kids pay for school. The main point: it used to be that 60% of Temple's expenses was paid by the state. Now that number is 20%, and the burden is now placed on students, who are graduating with an average of $30,000 in loans. So what's he gonna do about it? Erm..we'll see.

In even more celebrity stuff, it was leaked that Lupe Fiasco and most likely Asher Roth will be performing for homecoming next Saturday!

Then there is also this article about current Temple Hospital VP of government programs George Kenney considering a possible run at city council next cycle since a current GOP spot is opening up, but he has stated he's probably not going to do it. Well, that's interesting.

Tomorrow is Tuesday, and that means a new edition of the Temple News. It looks like they have already begun rolling out the new articles online. You need to check this one out, it's about anal beer bongs and vodka soaked tampons. Yea, we're not fuckin' around! Can't even comment on this one! Too funny! Just read!

There were no sports today, but the football team went ahead and made some news anyway. This Saturday's game against Ball State is being declared a "pink out" and so students are encouraged to wear pink to show their support for the fight against breast cancer. Ball State is also 0-5, and we have our first winning record since 1990 on the line, so it might be worth showing up. In other news, RB Bernard Pierce won MAC offensive player of the week for his 180 yard, 2 TD effort against EMU this past weekend.

In still more sports accolades, field hockey stand-out Bridget Settes won A-10 field hockey athlete of the week, so kudos to her as well!

MONDAY:
Green tip from the Temple Today: Heating water can account for like 14-25% of your energy dude. So, take shorter showers, wash hands/shave with cooler water, and if you buy new appliances, make sure they're energy star.

Today also marks the start of the semester long, single elimination racquetball t ournament. It's open to beginner through advanced, so stop by the IBC to sign-up.

Halloween costume donations: Halloween's around the corner(YIPPIEEE) but many local kids aren't going to have costumes(BOOO). So if you have any complete, extra costumes, bag 'em, label 'em, and donate it to room 207 at 1700 North Broad st. until this Friday.

Interested in studying away? Well you've had like a million chances, but here is one more for SCT. Study abroad session in suite 101 of 1810 Liacouras Walk at 3 p.m.

Just like that, the 5th weekend of our semester has come to an end. The good news is that the next one is only 4 days away. Oh so close. Yeaaaa.

It might be a tough one considering that we're all anticipating Temple hosting the first Bee Fest next weekend! That's right, scope this weekend article to see the...buzz...about Bee fest going on next Saturday at Ambler. Did you know bees are responsible for a third of our food? Wooahh.

Also, don't want to miss this philly.com doozie about sex in college. The question: is it cool for someone to have sex with their roommate present? (Note: not to be confused with "have sex with their roommate's present.") Tufts University recently banned such behavior, and philly.com took to the local campuses to get student opinions. Temple students prove once again they are the hippest, funniest college kids in Philadelphia, as Temple Senior Jordan Ramsey represents: "Ramsey was incredulous that a policy would be needed. Told about the Tufts ban, he quipped: "Somebody wasn't getting any!"

Also, Rutgers, wtf?

"Sex should never have witnesses. Then it's just porn," said Fleurette Louis-Jacques, 20, an English and French linguistics double major at Rutgers University. She and her roommate haven't discussed the topic, she said, but added that they don't have sex: "Seriously, not even being funny, we're like nuns."

But women's volleyball lost to Dayton and Xavier, field hockey lost to Stanford but shwooped UPenn, women's soccer lost to GW, and men's soccer took out Siena.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:

Temple Theater kicks off with "Sweet Charity." The 2009-10 theater productions begin with this "jazzy musical comedy" at 8 p.m. in Tomlinson Theater. Students tickets are $10 with your owlcard. Check it outttt.

Not to be out done by theater, the TU symphony orchestra is also putting on a show, but this one is at 7:30 in Haverford. Sorry, not going there. But if that's your thing on a Friday night, go for it!

Free food and Fun Fridays is doing their thing at the SAC tonight, as always. This time though, they're doing their own version of "are you smarter than a fifth grader" and we're sure they'll have prizes to give out and all sorts of other goodies. For free.

And last but certainly not least, don't miss the 5th Annual Temple Spine Symposium: Spinal Oncology and Spinal Degeneration. This is a can't miss, we'll see ya there!

Sports: Temple sports finally start playing games again today after taking, like, the entire week off. Only one home game though, field hockey vs. Stanford at 3 p.m. @ Geasey Field.

Ya made it, congrats, and be safe when having fun tonight. Remember those undercovers still might be out there, so keep an eye out.

Earlier in the week we noted that there was very little news going on, and asked students to go wreak havoc and make some news. Did someone take us literally?

Peep this story on how a fiberglass baby cow was kidnapped a few days ago from a food joint in Rosemont, PA. Guess it has some sentimental value, because the owner put up a $500 reward for its return. Two anonymous girls then notified the owner they spotted the cow at...dun dun dunnnn.. a Temple party. They returned it, and received their reward and some milk and cookies. Friggin' weird.

We also have a little good news/bad news action. That strike that was supposed to start today at TU Hospital? Didn't happen. The bad news? They still have no contract, so the situation is still on the decline. Just how bad is it? Employees voted down the University's proposal 1,051 to 7.

Temple was also in the news today, in the Philadelphia Gay News that is. There is an article in there about "Coming out week" at Temple next week, and it includes a schedule such as a showing of the movie "Milk" on Monday, and various chances to pick up literature on campus organizations and support networks, and of course a couple of opportunities to..come out.

Morning Temple and welcome to October, and more importantly, Thirsty Thursday. October is one of those special months that will see FIVE Saturdays, and we also luck out because Halloween falls on the last Saturday.
It's cold! With October comes cooler weather, and it should barely make it into the 60's today, mostly temps in the 50's and dropping close to the high 40's overnight. Rep those hoodies.

Good stuff from the Temple Today:
We got some more artsy stuff going on, as the Jack Wolgin art prize thingy opens it's exhibit at the Temple Gallery today at 6 pm. The competition has come down to three finalists vying for a $150,000 prize, and their work will now be on display through the month of October, at the end of which a winner will be declared. We're gonna scope it out before long and give it the ol' C&W rating.

Student Center Operations is going to be celebrating its second birthday in the SAC atrium today. What exactly is Student Center Operations, you may be asking? We don't know! We assume it's got something to do with operations going on in the SAC, but we do know that they're going to have cake, info, trivia games, and prizes from 10-2. Happy birthday student center operations! Now give me yo' cake.

Feel guilty after eating that cake? Attend this "brown-bag lunch session" in Mitten 250 at 12 to learn how to eat the things you like, but without unhealthy ingredients.

More self help! Feel like you're clueless in job interviews? Check out this session in Mitten Hall 220 at 2:00 that is apparently going to teach you to "interview like a pro." Says it covers everything from behavior questions to etiquette. They're also giving out free suits. That's a joke.

In other stuff, we know the REEL changes movies today, but they haven't updated their website so we don't know to what. After year one and the proposal, they're due for a good one. Anybody know?

And on a final note, congratulations to the 2009 National League East Philadelphia Phillies! If the season ending today, they would be playing the Colorado Rockies in the first round, but that is subject to change if they flip positions with the Dodgers or Cardinals.

Congratulations, you've made it to the college weekend. You've also made it to the end of September, and right on cue the weather has turned to shit.

But is ain't allllll bad.

First, peep this short article about Temple's School of Tourism and Hospitality management winning some unspecified award from the International Festivals & Events Association. Good job! We think.

Temple students win awards too! Check out this Temple Times article about how SCT students Chinonye Chukwu and Craig Bazan won prestigious Princess Grace awards for film. Chukwu took home $24,000 to produce a film.

Then, check out this Citypaper article, whose writer came to Temple in search of Owls with fashion sense. And as you can see, boy, did they find some.

The Temple News also posted some interesting stuff tonight. First, check out their BAC post about how TU alert will be doing a test tomorrow at 4 p.m. So if you're in class at that time, get your giggle face ready as it's almost guaranteed that someone will have forgotten to turn their phone on silent. Then again, only about 10 people have signed up so maybe not.

Then, check out this montage the put up of the Friday Freestyle session. In case you missed it, legit freestylers and wannabes alike gather by the bell tower every Friday afternoon to wage some lyrical battles. TN recorded some of it and took some photos, pretty cool.

No sports today, again, but there is a new article on the website about a "turn back the clock" men's b-ball game at McGonigle hall against Bowling Green, the first men's game played there since 1997. Read: not worth hosting a game in the LC for Bowling Screen, a game with an average attendance of about 500.

Also at the time of posting, the Phils are up 10-3 in the bottom of the 7th in their bid to win the NL East for the third straight year. So unless they blow it, cheers to Phils!

Rise and shine Temple...2 days down, 2 more to go until it's Friday.

Unfortunately, we won't be getting any help from the weather today, which is looking low 60s and cloudy by day, and then dipping into the low 50s and clear by night. Bust out those hoodies everyone.

Cream of the crop from Temple Today:

Blood drive! Go do some good today at Johnson or Hardwick from 10-8. It says you need to be a resident or have someone sign you in, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to get in. Perfect timing too..as far away from the alcohol end of the college cycle as possible.

The provost's art collection on the ground floor of Paley runs today until Friday. It says it has works of faculty and students, might be worth checking out. But she's only bringing it out for three days!! Does anyone else get this image of a richie rich style vault where the Provost just hordes all her art and occasionally throws a bone to the proletariat?

Paley's having an artsy day as they're also hosting a film at 7 pm by Wolgin finalist(the wolgin competition is a big, international art competition Temple is putting on) Sanford Biggers. The film is based around the history of the song "strange fruit," made famous by Billie Holiday, and will surely discuss race related issues.

Tonight is Temple night at Ortlieb's Jazzhaus, located at 837 N 3rd Street. If jazz is your thing or you think you'd like it to be your thing, might wanna check it out. Here is their website.

There are no sports today, except of course the Phillies trying to clinch the NL East against the Astros.

Just like Pedro Feliz's grandslam tonight against the Houston Assholes, lifting the Phillies to a 7-4 victory and moving them just ONE WIN AWAY from clinching a playoff berth. A grand slam, Madson closing two strong innings, the fans on their feet with rally towels swingin'... that's the Phillies we know.

So today, if you couldn't tell by the bare bones C&W posting, had like zero news going on. Seriously, somebody go make some news. Flip over tables at the TECH center, steal all the ketchup from J and H, put a horse in the Dean's office, anything.

If you didn't get a chance to check it out, make sure you pick up a copy of the latest Temple News to see all of their new articles, and the 2009 "Lunchie Awards." They got a whole bunch of stuff in there, but of course Richie's takes home first place for lunch trucks. Agreed. How does he find time to make so much delicious food and update his facebook every 15 minutes? Also, take the poll on their website for a chance to win $50.

In sports news, Temple linebacker "Peanut" Joseph got MAC defensive player of the week, highlighted by his interception return against Buffalo that came in at number 9 on Sports Center's top plays.

In other sports news, Temple b-ball picked up a big time recruit from the class of 2010, 6'9 power forward Anthony Lee of Florida. Ranked number #28 nationally at his position, Lee also had offers from BCS schools such as Southern Cal and Seton Hall.

There's a new media center opening in Paley Library, and they're giving away food, tours, and other shit from 9-4. For those who didn't know, you are able to "rent" movies and DVDs from the circulation desk in Tuttleman. It sounds like this media center will now take care of that, along with other things. Why Tristan when you can Paley?

If you missed one of the 50 chances you've had, you can still learn about studying abroad in Japan in Tuttleman 200 today.

Hey technology people, check out the job fair in the Student Center room 200 today at 1:30. Yea, we all know your job prospects are better, la dee da.

And just like that, Monday is over. Quick and painless right? Now just one more day until there is one more day until there is one more day til the weekend. We're so close!
Campus news:

What the hell was going on by the Bell Tower today? Besides free pretzels and water? It was the emergency preparedness fair, of all things. And apparently FEMA head Craig Fugate spoke about being prepared or something. Who knows, but those were some yummy pretzels.

Speaking of yummy shit, get ready for tomorrow's Temple News because they got the 2009 Lunchie awards, an annual ranking of the best grub on campus and other things such as "colorful personalities." Check out their preview post on the BAC for more info and a nice little video montage(REMIX!) of lunchers around campus.

TSG had their first state of the campus address today, and honestly, not much went on. However, they will be running shopping buses to south philly fo free, with the first one coming up Oct. 6. Wal-mart, best buy, food stores, all that jazz.

In other news, Temple researches dropped a highly publicized study today about the link between obesity and sleep apnea(slow breathing while sleeping). It returns like 23 google results go it's gotta be pretty big. The study supports the long suspected link that losing weight helps to cure sleep apnea.

Check out this ominous biz journal headline: "Stage Set for Temple Universit y Hospital Strike." There was a union rally outside TUH today, and workers said if they didn't have their contract settled on the 30th, they will be striking on Oct. 2. Yaaayyyyyy.

There were no sports today, but peep this article about former Owl basketball standout Mark Tyndale finding himself on the Milwaukee Buck's training camp roster. Tyndale went undrafted two years ago, but wound up playing pro ball in Australia last year. Apparently the guard impressed some people, because they're giving him a chance. The article also mentions Dionte Christmas getting a chance with the 6ers and Semaj Inge playing pro ball in Iceland of all places.

All I know is there's a bunch of midterms coming up so we're about 1/3 of the way through the semester. Here's your weekly look-out:

Weather: Definitely cooling off a little bit this week...here comes fall.

Monday(Today):

Yom Kippur. We're not going to even pretend we know what's going on here. There's going to be services at the student center at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. And then a break fast at 7:30? We assume this means like breaking a fast, not like cereal and donuts for dinner?

"Workshop: Resume Writing for the extremely smart, yet uninformed!" I'm sorry, what? These people will apparently teach you how to write a highly effective resume and cover letter. I hope they're better at that than writing event titles.

The Monday night film series in Tuttleman 101 at 5:15. This week's flick: the 1971 Stanley Kubrick film "A Clockwork Orange." It's a crazy one.

Ambler's trip to the Phillies dollar dog night. Ambler one-ups main campus yet again by offering transportation and tickets to the game for 15 bucks. Bets now being taken for who chokes first: drunk college kids on the dollar dogs or Brad Lidge against his former team.

Tuesday:

New media center at Paley opens: And they're doing fun shit for it! Tours, snacks, and give-aways from 9-4. There's a bunch of new stuff, including "videos and DVDs to borrow and study for leisure." Renting movies fo' free? Thank God, because I owe Tristan like 50 bucks and am not going back there anytime soon. Ridiculous rates.

Want to study abroad in Japan? Plane leaves from Tuttleman 200 at 11 am. Either that or an info session.

Science and Tech. job fair: 1:30-5:30 in the SAC 200. If you were smarter than the rest of us and chose a major in science and technology, where, ya know, people are still hiring, check this out for potential employers.

Wednesday:

Blood drive: At Johnson, Hardwick, and Peabody from 10-8. Is it just our immaturity, or does the whole phrase Johnson, Hardwick, and Peabody just beg for some 6th-grade level jokes? Anyways, get there and do some good.

Dressing like a pro: Do you dress like Harry and Lloyd? Attend this session at 1 pm in Mitten 220, and let these peeps teach you "what works and what doesn't"

Temple night @ a jazzhaus: Is that German for Jazz house? Either way, something Jazzy and Temple related going on over at Ortlibe's Jazzhaus, 837 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Thursday:

Jack Wolgin competition art exhibition: Tyler is putting on a little (big) art competition with major money up for grabs. The exhibition of the competitor's work starts on Thurs in the Temple Gallery at Tyler.

Want to maybe study abroad in Rome next Spring? If you do, then Thursday is your last chance to apply.

Weight management session: This workshop in 250 Mitten at noon says it'll teach you how to eat the things you love without all the salt, fat, and sugar. Well that's going to be pretty damn hard considering those are three of the four main ingredients in everything delicious. The 4th being alcohol, of course. But I guess that's why they're the ones teaching the workshop?

Friday:

You've been so patient, suffered in anticipation so quietly. But wait no longer, because the 5th Annual Temple Spine Symposium: Spinal Oncology and Spinal Degeneration has arrived! Hooray!

Big time guest for all you tech/film nerds and Mac users out there. Bahram Farogi, one of Apple's leading tech gurus, will be in the TECH center 111 to give first hand instruction on using Final Cut Pro 6. You know how colleges like to further your education by proving really valuable, free advice from professionals? Film people, this would be one of those things.

Sports news highlight weekend

Hello fellow Owls, and welcome back to the week. Hopefully you all had a fun and citation-free weekend, and were able to enjoy some of the sports victories that went down this weekend.

Speaking of which, Temple football friggin won! Check below for highlights. And not only did they win on a pretty nice day down at the Linc, they killed 'em too, 37-13. And our boy Elijah "Peanut" Joseph,(Yup, Peanut) interception TD return came in at number 9 on SportsCenter's top 10 plays.

Lincoln Financial was the lucky field this weekend, as the Eagles also killed the Kanas City Chiefs by a very similar score, 34-14. And Vick didn't do shit.

Oh, and LOL @ PSU.

Not to be out done, the men's soccer team also took down a very good Hartford team 2-1, with all American J.T. Noone picking up two assists.

In non-sports news:

Ever wonder what it would be like to live with your parents at college? Check out this amazing article about Temple student Rob Wunder III, who was tragically paralyzed diving into a pool a few years back. His Dad is putting everything on pause to live with him four nights a week at college(1300, we believe) in order to help him obtain an education. Best of luck to both of them. All with a sense of humor too:

"It's nothing anybody else wouldn't do for their kids," said Wunder, a former high school football coach built like a linebacker, with kind, sparkling blue eyes and an easy smile.It's a big sacrifice for him to put up with me being here.
His son, 19, a husky 6-foot-3 with dark-rimmed glasses, a beard, and a mustache, chimed in: "I have to put up with him. He has to put up with me."

In other news, Temple's questionable policies regarding alcohol continue to get some press. Peep this article from Haverford and Bryn Mawr's newspaper titled "Haverford's Alcohol Policy Better than Everyone Else's". Despite that awful title, the article makes some good points about how Haverford's emphasis on personal responsibility is a little better than Temple's strict, zero-tolerance, high-fine policy. Then again, they're not a campus of 12,000 living in the middle of North Philly.
