Over

Hey folks sorry for the lack of posts over the last day or two but once again news was kinda slow. This will be the last post of the semester; over the summer we will be updating the blog once a week on Sunday nights, going over whatever news happened that week and stuff to look out for the following week. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for reading the Cherry and What? over the past semester; it's your showing up, voting, commenting, and e-mailing that keep us motivated, so thanks. We look forward to keeping you entertained and informed through next year.

So anyways, graduation! Today are the commencement exercises for the newest graduates of our university. Check out this blog post from philly.com earlier today for a quick peek.

Also from philly.com, check out this editorial sticking up for Shannon McDonald. The reporters at the paper have been great defending McDonald and her article that brought to light racist comments made by a Philadelphia Police Officer.

Marijuana!! Now with multiple sclerosis slowing abilities. That's right, Temple researchers found another use for chemicals in the drug: slowing down the over active immune system of a body suffering from MS. But don't legalize it... our society would collapse.

Also, go to this website to vote for Temple University's comedy team as they battle against the University of Florida Hators for a right to go to a competition in Aspen. We watched both videos and definitely think TU's was better. But we didn't know that Jake Gyllenhaal was on our comedy team.

Sorry, we know the posts are slowing down(we've got these damn final things too) but at least it allows the slow trickle of news in these closing days to accumulate to a bit of a puddle.

First you have this Temple Times article about "Paint the Town Cherry Week," Temple's week long celebration with colors everywhere and people wearing hoodie's and yadda yadda yadda I'M A TEMPLE OWL VIDEO CONTEST. The article posts links to the winners of the video contest, a challenge from the University to both undergraduate and alumni groups to create a school spirit video, and boy are the entries terrible. Below is the first place video from the undergraduate category by freshman Dan McKinney, which we believe won because it is the only one where the person actually appears to know what they are doing with a camera. We have also posted a mind-numbing entry that won 2nd place in the alumni category, because, well... you'll see. Check out the article to see the rest of the videos.

Also on the Temple Times was this article, which discusses the challenges of finding a job upon graduating from Temple and interviews Rachel Brown, director of Temple's career center. Brown provides some worthwhile tips so if you have any concern about the idea of finding a job you should take a look.

The Temple News' editorial board has found itself in a bit of a battle of wits with a local reporter. On May 5, the editorial board published this article, Grad Gripes, criticizing Temple for the selection of Ann Weaver Hart as our commencement speaker. The basic idea was that we are paying customers and deserve something a little more dazzling and memorable for our commencement speaker. Well apparently Inqy writer Daniel Rubin took issue with this, as he painted Temple students as whiny, drunk, naive individuals.

"I don't think these kids get it. Commencement speeches are supposed to be brutally dull. These speeches are not for you. They're for your funders, the folks sitting somewhere nearby...It's unlikely you will remember anything about the speech...It's likely you will be deeply hung over...[the] moment you flip that tassel from one side of your mortarboard to the other, the meter starts running. It's all on you now."

No Mr. Rubin, I don't think you get it. We just paid 4, many of us 5, years tuition and change on this University. It's not that we don't like Ann Weaver Hart, we just expect something more. We're sorry you didn't listen to your graduation speaker, but that has nothing to do with what we expect from ours. In case you didn't know, Temple students are known for their grit and drive, and we're aware of our responsibilities and the troubles that lie ahead; this ain't UPenn. Many Temple students already hold down part time jobs or take out ridiculous amounts of money in loans, so to act as if we have been living off of our parents for the past 4 years is pretty insulting. You're right though, we'll probably be hungover. We'll give ya that one.

Weekend news:

Not much to report from this past weekend, just an article or two and sports.

Check out this philly.com article about college students falling off of their parent's health insurance plans after college, leaving them uninsured. The article offers conflicting opinions about how to fix this problem and features comments from several Temple students.

Take a look at Temple University's office of sustainability website for their new summer tips. Tip: grow your own vegetables. Oh, of course. Also, hang your "close out to dry." Hey Office of Sustainability, need a paid editor for your website?

In sports, baseball was swept by St. Louie 11-7 and 12-3. In the Dad Vail Regatta, the women's team had a pretty good showing with their novice eight placing 4th overall and their varsity eight placing 5th. The men's team was a mixed bag, as the varsity eight failed to qualify for the finals for the first time in 27 years, but their JV eight won gold, and novice eight won bronze.

News:

Oh, so much news, so much news.

First you've got the BAC with a nice post about how you can no longer park your car on the same block as Alter Hall's FOX SCHOOL OF BUSINESS aluminum letters. That would be on 13th street, which runs between Alter Hall and Tuttleman. The BAC brings up a good, and obvious point, that this is stupid as hell as parking on campus is already bad enough. Yorktown residents complain about Temple students parking in their neighborhood, students complain about their car getting broken into/smashed into/parked-in in places such as the dirt lot and at the intersection of 20th and Hood, but Temple will be damned if we park in front of those shiny, gaudy letters. Sorry BAC, we're stealing your ridiculously large photo because we're just too damn hungover to go get it ourselves. We'll send ya a fruit basket.

Read, or listen, to this story about Temple Professor Steven Kreinberg's "Art of Listening Class," a Boyer class designed to teach students about all kinds of unique and classical music. It includes a number of trips down to landmark performance centers in the city, and sounds perfect for anyone who already has or wants to gain an appreciation for less mainstream sound.

Temple gets mention in this philly.com article about philly area colleges trying to meet their enrollment goals. Temple's deposit rate is up 6% from last year, better than any other school. So yea, main campus is gonna be crowded as hell next year, again. Don't these pre-frosh know about the new no-parking on 13th street policy?

In sports, baseball lost to St. Louie 12-11 on Friday. In the Dad Vail Regatta, men's crew advanced three boats to today's competition, and the women 2. Finals should be underway by about noon today, so check the TU athletics website over the weekend to keep updated on how they're doing. Oh and peep this article on philly.com about how the Schuylkill was so shitty it was dangerous on Thursday, forcing changes to the Regatta's schedule. Our favorite: the 40 foot tree.

For this weekend, just a few things to keep an eye out for.

The Final Friday

Is...is that blue sky? AND a sun? This is weather is going crazy. Enjoy the 7o degree and sunny weather while you can because weather.com is predicting the return of clouds and rain around 4 pm today.

So today marks the last Friday of the year and finals day 2 of 5. In a nice break from there being absolutely nothing going on on campus this week, there are actually a few things to do today.

First you have the Temple University community American Red Cross blood drive. Now til 3 in the SAC 200. Stickers on sale for one pint of blood.


Author Chuck Palahniuk, who wrote the books turned movies Fight Club and Choke, will be at the Free Library of Philadelphia to read parts of his new book, Pygmy, and sign authographs. It's scheduled for 7:30 but insiders suggest getting there by 6 to secure a good spot and guarantee not watching him on a monitor from another room. It's free to attend and the library is located at 1901 Vine Street (2oth and the parkway).

Men's and women's crew are competing in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta down on the Schuylkill near Kelly drive, and given the current weather it'd make a nice noontime to head down there and see some races.

Baseball is playing those damn St. Louie Billikins over at Ambler @ 3 pm, which could very well mean a rain-out.

Also at Ambler, you have the"Let’s Get Moving Health Walk" at noon. It seems this is some kind of weekly health initiative where students are encouraged to walk one mile. At main campus, this is referred to as walking to class at Anderson and Gladfelter.

Aren't finals fun??

In news today, it rained..again. When will it be nice again, you ask? Sunday, weather.com says; sunny and a high of 69.


Congrats to the Temple News who won an "EPpy" award for best college news website in the entire nation. And yea..it's an extremely legit award from Editor & Publisher that is given to all kinds of different media outlets, big and small. It's a great honor for a great job by the Temple News.

Also on the BAC today, an anonymous dude handed out some boycott letters at the SAC, protesting the food court. We don't wanna steal the EPpy winner's thunder so check out the letter at the link. Well it ain't exactly protesting the Iraq war but it's a start.

A few good stories from philly.com today. First, take a look at this article on an anonymous donor who sent $5,000,000 to Temple in the mail last winter (no, not in cash). Temple appears to be one of about 20 institutions around the nation who have received similar donations, all universities with a female president. This prompted feministing.com to title the donor the "feminist fairy godmother." Ooook.

Also, check out this article about Temple football making the grade. The football team scored high enough marks to get them off the hook for infractions under the previous coach. Kudos to the coach and team, but somebody tell that to my football player lab partner who sleeps through class.

In news from the Temple Times, check out this article for details on next Thursday's commencement. "The graduates come from 82 nations and 47 states (including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia) and range in age from 20 to 77." Congrats grandpa.

So we now reach the first official last day of the 08-09 school year, a day that has treated us well this year, good ol' thirsty thursday. We'll see ya next fall.

Wednesday night: procrastinator's purgatory

Another study day, another slow Temple news day.

However, there were a few things.

Temple journalism student and soon-to-be alumni Shannon McDonald had not one but TWO write-ups on philly.com today. The first article was a short opinion piece defending McDonald as just doing her job and also defends Officer Thrasher as a victim of political correctness. A second article fleshed out the story from beginning to end, and contains some interesting and insightful quotes from Ms. McDonald herself.

Also, as if this damn journalism field wasn't competitive enough, there was an article in Philly.com today about a high school senior in Bucks county who won high school poet of the year. And guess what, she's coming to Temple to study journalism! Well hopefully she won't be applying to the same internships as the rest of us.

In sports, Temple baseball lost 8-3 after committing 5 errors and stranding 12 runners, while the Phils lost 1-0 to the mucking fets of New York.

Humpday

Humpday; it's baaaaack. Today is the last study day before making it over that proverbial hump and launching into finals.

The weather is going to be decent, mid 60's and party cloudy during the day, before raining again throughout the night. So either take advantage of the day and maybe relax a bit, or get in that last minute cramming for tomorrow's exams.

The C&W is a bit curious about suicide rates during finals week, given the number of poll takes here who selected "I will probably jump off a cliff." They probbbbably mean going bungee jumping.

Also,Temple's sustainability page was updated with some more green tips, particularly how to shop green.

No, not that kind of green. The site basically just says "use garage sales."

Ok so we've been searching through news site after news site and there is literally no news. I mean, you have Paula Abdul admitting a 12 year drug addiction, philadelphia getting a lingerie football team, and maybe a few more swiners in the region, that's about it.

Cherry and What? Looking for New Contributors for Next Year

The Cherry and What? has quite a few plans for expansion starting next semester. We'll be keeping our daily blog as the homepage and "news" section, but will be adding additional pages that focus on specific topics. Posts on these pages will be a bit more fleshed out than the usual posts on the news page, but occur less frequently.

We need one person per section to create and post content. If you are interested and meet the following criteria, send a resumé, short paragraph about why you'd be a good fit for the C&W, desired section, and a few writing samples to CherryandWhat@temple.edu by May 31. Keep in mind we're college kids too so no need to B.S.

+ Sections include: Health, Environmentalism, Arts, Entertainment(music and movies), Sports, and a photo page.
+ Post at least 2 "articles" per week, and a few shorter posts about relevant information.
+ The photo page will just be a collection of interesting sights around campus.
+ Can gear the writing towards the Temple scene (fitness classes, recycling programs, movies and shows near campus, temple sports, etc).
+ Have a good sense of humor and a passion for writing.
+ Don't mind not making any money.

Weather: Mid 50's and cloudy all day, chance of rain overnight.

Today marks the first of two study days leading up to finals, which begin Thursday. Some students will use this opportunity to catch up on all their work and prepare for finals. Most will sleep til 5 pm and then emerge to pack the tech center.

Take a look at this article on philly.com about Temple professor Marc Lamont Hill, perhaps the most well known Temple scholar. Hill is at the forefront of discussions involving race and hip-hop music, and the 4 page article does his cause and efforts justice.

What do you do when you get in a dispute over beer pong? Refer to the house rules right? Maybe play a rock papers scissors game to decide? This dude(not the guy to the right..that's Dr. Hill), well... he shoots and kills people. As reported by philly.com

Temple Health Services released this statement on the swine flu. Come on guys, that's like so last week. It says the University has no plans to change anything, don't cough on people, and if you puke, go to health services. Good lookin' out, Temple.

Monday night

So the big story tonight was that today was the last day of classes. Students were rewarded with sunny, 80 degree weather and many laid out on Beury Beach to relax and take a breath of fresh air. Oh wait, no it actually rained all day and everyone got soaked. Oh well, at least classes are over with.

Study days(stupor days) are Tuesday and Wednesday, which means if you're not reading this, you're probably out drinking right now.

In other news students and administrators had a good-bye party for Dean Carry, who is heading to Auburn as previously reported on the C&W. We shall miss you.

Also, for the scholarly among you, you must be lost. No but seriously, this article in the Temple Times says that administrators are basically combing for students to apply for prestigious scholarships, so if you "have interesting ideas and experiences that they can share with the world" and a good GPA, might wanna check that out.

In philly news, check out this website for some "democratic art." In other words, you get to help pick which mural will be painted in the city. Prettty cooool.


In sports Temple baseball was cancelled, while the Phils won 6-1 against the cardinals.

Oh, and for some reason the Temple News website was down, we're guessing operatives from Harrisburg shut 'em down after their BAC post today criticized the state senate for threatening to cut 90 mil in funds over the new cell phone law.

The Weekender

And with that, the final full-fledged weekend of Temple's 08-09 school year has come to a close. Finals week will be busy for everyone, included the C&W staff, but keep a look-out this week for some posts looking back on the best and worst of the year.

This past weekend didn't offer too much news, but there were a couple things.

edit: Oh yea there was also this little thing called the Broad Street Run, an annual 10 mile race that draws thousands of competitors from all over the world. We kinda missed that. Check out pictures of the runners jamming up the streets of Temple's campus here, courtesy of Fun, Fitness, and Fresh-air.

Also, the swine flu is like, so last week. Now the C&W feels really dumb for freaking out and believing all of that hoopla. Oh wait, that was every single mass media outlet. New-era journalism: 1, newscorp: nil.

Then there was this article in philly.com about commencement speakers at college graduations. The gist of the article is that commencement speakers are scratching their heads at how to deliver a positive message given the current state(shitty) of the world. However, it also listed speakers at a bunch of universities. St. Joe's is getting Chris Matthews. Franklin and Marshall gets Colin Powell Bucknell gets Elie Wiesel. And Temple gets... Anthony Scirica, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Oh goodie.

Also on philly.com, although not really related to Temple, a pitcher on a high school baseball team dropped an umpire with a vicious uppercut on the baseball field next to University Village. Apparently the trigger was a dispute over whether he was thrown out at second or not, but the C&W suspects that it might have something to do with the 23-4 score, with all 23 runs being the responsibility of said pitcher. The name also has not been released, but the C&W suspects it may be Chan Ho Park.

Sports: Friday- baseball lost 13-10 @ Richmond. Saturday: baseball won 8-3 @ Richmond. Sunday: baseball lost 8-6 @ Richmond, softball lost both games of a dub-header to St. Bonnie 4-3 & 5-1, eliminating them from playoff contention. All weekend: the men's and women's track team competed well in the A-10 championships, with the men's team taking third and the women's fourth. The men's team was led by junior Brad McFadden who won the 400m hurdles, while the women's team was paced by sophomore Paris Williams who won the 400m dash.

That's right, Mayor Nutter signed a law yesterday that banned talking on a cell phone while driving in Philadelphia. It's not going to be "enforced" until November 1, and it's only going to cost Philly 90 mil a year!

The move comes on the same day that a mini-van driving woman who was talking on her cell phone crashed into a Septa bus, injuring 16.

"Police said that the dramatic scene unfolded about 3 p.m. when the driver of the Plymouth minivan - who was talking on her cell phone - drove through a red light on Hunting Park Avenue near Kensington, and slammed into the No. 3 bus."

Oh yea, because I always run red lights when I talk on my cell phone. Unfortunately, drivers will still be able to smoke a cigarette, change CDs, look in their glove box, shift gears, apply makeup, talk to a person in the passenger seat, or do one of another thousand things while driving.

Not only is the law illogical and dumb, it also might be expensive as hell. Philly.com reported that state legislators in Harrisburg basically stated that vehicle code is their business, and if philly passed this law they would strip us of gas tax and highway and bridge funding to the tune of 90 MILLION DOLLARS. And we all know philly has that kind of money laying around.

So what to do, what to do?

Well first of all, in the philly.com article they quoted critic Philip J. Berg, an attorney, stating he will help anyone who gets citations for free. So we're gonna keep him in the Rolodex.

Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to e-mail mayor nutter's office and let him know you aren't happy. Here is the e-mail address: mayor.nutter@phila.gov.

Dear Mayor Nutter,

I was recently informed of the law you signed banning drivers from using their cell phones. I think the law is ineffective and is just a feel-good law, as the real difference just comes down to responsible drivers vs. irresponsible drivers. Responsible drivers will be hurt by this law, while irresponsible drivers can still be distracted by many other things such as applying make-up, smoking a cigarette, or changing music.

Furthermore, the law is irresponsible as it could possibly cost the city up to $90 million in funds from the state government. During this time of economic recession, the city of Philadelphia cannot afford such a cut.

As a citizen and taxpayer of Philadelphia, I ask that you represent me in repealing this law.
